Magnum P.I. (2020) – Double Jeopardy, and Easy Money

Season three of Magnum gets underway with Double Jeopardy. Written by showrunners Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, the season debuted on 4 December, 2020.

Higgins (Perdita Weeks) is settling into the role of running the estate, and she informs Magnum (Jay Hernandez) that he’s going to have to start paying rent, or move out. There’s some static between them with these new changes, she’s technically his boss on the estate, but they still remain partners in their private investigation.

The pair are hired to find a client’s missing brother, but it seems there is something bigger going on here, and there’s a revenge plan of some kind in the works, which leads to Higgins being shot (and meeting a cute doctor, Ethan (Jay Ali)), and T.C. (Stephen Hill) being abducted. The clients are really looking for their missing brother, they’re looking for someone who saw them get sent to prison for a murder they didn’t commit, but are willing to commit now.

Higgins is focused on running the estate like a business, and that could cause a number of problems for Magnum. There’s a new tension in their relationship.

We also see that Rick (Zachary Knighton) is doing community service, thanks to Katsumoto (Tim Kang), for his involvement in Icepick’s (Corbin Bernsen) crime.

And as the case gets wrapped up, and lays some new narrative threads down, including a possible romance for Higgins, we learn that someone may be following Magnum. And how will he feel about this new thing for Higgins?

At least Magnum gets to stay on the estate, rent-free, in the guest house, though he had to pawn his dad’s watch to get the Ferrari’s tires replaced. Wonder if that will come back?

Easy Money opens with Higgins and Ethan out on a date, but that’s only a quiet respite before the action gets underway. Written by David Wolkove, this episode was first broadcast on 11 December, 2020. We also see Magnum trying to pawn things to get his father’s watch back, but apparently, it’s already been sold! Katsumoto is working on tracking down who was falling Magnum in the white Range Rover and the reveals by the end of the episode seem to hint at more trouble.

But the case of the episode sees Magnum and Higgins taking a job that sees them repossessing a plane. Unfortunately, the plane is being used by a drug cartel that forces them to crash land in the jungle, and they discover they aren’t the only ones on the plane. It seems Renaldo (Niko Giardado) hid aboard the plane and was trying to escape because the cartel thought was skimming money off the top.

Soon, Rick, T.C., Katsumoto and Palima (Hayden Szeto) – the cop from the Halloween serial killer episode last season – head out to find their missing friends, who are having a run-and-gun through the jungle as Higgins’ bullet wound from last week causes lots of problems.

Will Magnum, Higgins and Renaldo be able to keep the baddies at bay until T.C. and Rick arrive in the chopper?

Of course, they do. And as the episode closes out, Higgins decides she’s willing to explore the possibility of a relationship with Ethan, and that she was the one who bought Magnum’s watch to get it back for him.

My exploration of season three continues next week as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
