Magnum P.I. (2020) – May the Best One Win, and A Leopard on the Prowl

Despite saying he’s okay with it, Magnum (Jay Hernandez) seems less than thrilled that Higgins (Perdita Weeks) is going to fake marry T.C. (Stephen Hill) to secure her green card, and keep her from being dealing with immigration.

Written by Gene Hong, this episode was first broadcast on 8 May, 2020.

But, of course, a case comes their way, one that sees Thomas and Juliet working the same case, but for different clients, spouses each of who are convinced the other is cheating and wants evidence. The pair will be in competition with one another.

And it seems Juliet has most of Magnum’s friends now working for her, including Shammy (Christopher Thornton) who seems to be really digging it.

There is evidence on both sides to suggest that each spouse is definitely cheating, but who is? What’s really going on? And maybe the pair still care about one another. One is trying to reconnect the other with their birth father, and the other seems to be in trouble with the wrong crowd.

And Rick (Zachary Knighton) finds a body in La Mariana and calls in Katsumoto (Tim Kang) to help out. Rick starts to figure things out and gets in touch with the man’s daughter, Suzy (Betsy Phillips, Kingston’s wife) and helps her deal with the grief of losing her father. It’s a really nice arc.

In fact, the entire episode seems to be focused on different aspects of love and friendship. The wedding is looming and is about to get underway as the episode wraps up, but Higgins is ready to call it off, and go back to England to deal with immigration legally.

How long will she be gone for? And when will she be back? And what does that mean for their private investigator business.

A Leopard on the Prowl wraps up season two. Written by show runners Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim, it debuted on 8 May, 2020, back to back with the previous episode.

It seems Icepick (Corbin Bernsen) still fresh from prison, and still battling terminal cancer wanted to pull off one last score but gets double-crossed and hurt, forcing Rick, Magnum, Higgins and the rest to help him out.

Through it all, Icepick keeps the group in the dark, straining the relationship between he and Rick almost to the breaking point. The Ferrari gets shot up, Rick may be going away for a stint in prison as an accessory and Magnum has a fight atop a moving transport truck. There’s a lot happening in the last half of this episode, and it ties up the season nicely, while setting the stage for what is to come.

As the story progresses Magnum tries one last desperate gambit to keep Higgins in the country, he reaches out to Robin, and Robin is able to keep Higgins in Hawaii by making her the owner of the estate, which in effect makes her Magnum’s boss.

Next time I start digging into season three of the reimagined series as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
