Season Two of Magnum P.I. opens with another White Knight sequence from a Robin Masters’ novel, which Abby (Brooke Lyons) is reading but it doesn’t take long for Magnum (Jay Hernandez) to take a new case, something he chooses to do while Higgins (Perdita Weeks) decides whether or not she’s going to become his partner or not.
Their relationship has a bit of back and forth which is a little more antagonistic than usual, and does that have something to do with Abby? Maybe. Or maybe, the writers just like the bickering frenemies relationship.
Written by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim who have been helming the reimagined series, Payback for Beginners opened season two on 27 September, 2019.
Magnum is hired by wheel-chair bound Charlie Owens (Michael Patrick Thornton) whose wife, Leanna (Sonya Balmores) has gone missing, and the group learns that she witnessed her boss’ murder during a bank robbery.
Katsumoto (Tim Kang) isn’t willing to help him, Kumu (Amy Hill) is helping by being the ‘guy-in-the-chair,’ and they put together that Leanna is going after the bank robbers in revenge. Or is there something else going on?
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that something else is definitely happening, and it may involve everyone coming together to pull of a bit of a heist that recalls the opening sequence, and makes sure the series comes back in style.
The opener reintroduces all the regulars, and their relationships, and Rick (Zachary Kingston) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) everyone gets moments to shine, and of course show off the gorgeous locations. It also introduces a couple of character arcs for the season, Rick is toying with quitting the club, and Higgins goes back to England, as there is an overture from MI6 to return to the service.
Will she take the opportunity? And what happens when Abby sees the chemistry between Higgins and Magnum?

Honor Among Thieves was written by Gene Hong and first debuted on 4 October, 2019.
Higgins is back from England, and the pair are working on a case involving some suspicious texts from a stolen cellphone.
And Rick’s new job, is not a club, but he wants to purchase and run a Tiki bar, oh and the bar comes with a piano player… played by the original Rick, Larry Manetti. It also introduces a new character, Jin (Bobby Lee) who is a goofy criminal, and there’s some nice banter when the Jin, Higgins and Magnum are thrown together.
One of the phones Jin has acquired as some troubling texts messages that lead to Magnum and Higgins helping a woman, Sharon (Vedette Lim) in trouble, and her husband, Michael (Andrew Sato), a doctor who may be in even more trouble – he’s been kidnapped by one of his own patients.
T.C. comes to Rick’s aid, by helping finance Rick’s purchase of the tiki bar, allowing these two characters to become partners, while Magnum and Higgins continue to dance around the issue of whether they are or not.
Let’s enjoy more sun and surf next week when I dig into more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD from Paramount Canada. Aloha.
