Magnum P.I. (2019) – Blood in the Water, and The Day It All Came Together

The penultimate episode of season one of the reimagined Magnum P.I. was written by Gene Hong, and first debuted on 25 March, 2019.

While T.C. (Stephen Hill) deals with the imminent arrival (and then non-appearance) by his father, with lots of needling from Rick (Zachary Kingston) and Shammy (Christopher Thornton), Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) have Robin Masters’ new yacht hijacked out from under them.

Higgins is shot and injured, and the pair are left floating in the middle of the ocean, struggling to reach a shipping lane so that they can be rescued before Higgins bleeds out.

Intercut through the episode are incidents that took place before the series began, showing how Magnum arrived at Robin’s estate, and how their antagonistic relationship developed. Magnum pursues becoming a private investigator, and he and Higgins chafe from the beginning, it’s a lot of fun to see how their relationship started before we were introduced to them.

Eventually, Kumu (Amy Hill) reaches out to T.C. and the guys to let them know the yacht’s transponder is off, and Rick begins to suspect that a couple of boat thieves may have been behind the hijacking.

Katsumoto (Tim Kang) and the HPD can’t offer a lot of help, there’s no evidence, but will they be able to find and rescue their friends before it’s too late?

It’s an interesting episode, I like that it calls back to before the series started to show us how things have developed, and it also gives us a bit of a rest to simply enjoy the characters before plunging into the season finale.

The Day It All Came Together was written by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim and saw the return of Magnum’s ex, Hannah (Jordana Brewster) asking for his help, despite her previous betrayals to help find her missing father, who works for the CIA.

Closing out the season on 1 April, 2019, the episode sees Magnum asking Higgins to become his partner, but that doesn’t last long, because Magnum gets busted for passing counterfeit currency!?

It seems a missing person case he was working on saw him getting paid a hefty sum, but it’s all counterfeit, so what’s going on? The Feds led by Special Agent Kreshner (Brian Austin Green) have their investigation sidelined when a double homicide involving Magnum’s client, brings in Katsumoto and HPD.

And guess who may have been involved with all of it? Hannah. She may have been involved in Magnum’s case since the beginning. She begins to reveal what happened as well as explain her original betrayal of Magnum and the rest, her father is missing.

His decision to possibly help her, puts him at odds with almost everyone, including possibly burning bridges he’s made with Katsumoto. Higgins and the rest are reticent to help, but join Magnum on the hunt for the truth, and a search for a missing person who may have bigger implications.

But of course, it’s going to cost by the episode’s end, and will no doubt have some repercussions through what follows.

Next time we start season two, as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD from Paramount Canada, aloha!
