Sleepless in Seattle (1993) – 4K Review

Is there a better movie about love in the movies than Sleepless in Seattle? It’s not a movie about falling in love in the real world but falling in love in the movies and with movies. It’s also part of Sony Pictures’ release of their Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection, Volume 4.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan share the screen in the second of their three on-screen pairings, and under Nora Ephron’s direction deliver an enduring rom-com that was one of the first films to reference other films as part of everyday life.

Hanks is Sam, a widower, who, with his son Jonah (Ross Malinger), uproots his life in Chicago and moves to Seattle to try and put the memory of his late wife behind him. One night, Jonah calls into a radio talk show about his dad, and Sam ends up on the air. Meanwhile, in Baltimore, Annie (Ryan) is getting ready for the holiday season with her fiance, Walter (Bill Pullman).

When Annie hears Sam she feels an immediate connection and begins to wonder if there’s some sort of destiny or fate at work, something that is encouraged by her friend, Becky (Rosie O’Donnell). And so, the film begins to work at bringing the two of them together.

It’s a delightful feel-good movie and also has a fantastic supporting cast, Rita Wilson, Victor Garber, David Hyde Pierce, Gaby Hoffman, and Rob Reiner. It’s a magical film that shows the beauty of love, as portrayed in movies, not in real life. With lots of film references, and enjoyable performances, I do like Hanks’ comedic turns, Sleepless in Seattle endures and appeals to the romantic in me.

There’s a gentleness to the 4K upgrade, it feels warm, and welcoming, like a big comfy blanket. Filled with great music, this film has long been a favourite, and I love how it looks, cleaned up and fresh.

Of course, there are extras. The Blu-ray comes filled with a lot of bonus features. It has the theatrical trailer, which I knew backwards and forwards as it played all the time on our loop tape in the video store I worked in, the music video for Celine Dion and Clive Griffin’s “When I Fall in Love,” deleted scenes, a featurette about love in the movies, a quick catch up with Meg Ryan and producer Gary Foster, and there are two commentaries, one featuring Nora and Delia Ephron, and a 30th Anniversary one hosted by critics Karen Han and David Sims.

This is my kind of rom-com, warm, funny, and heartfelt, and it looks great in 4K and makes a wonderful addition to the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection. Featured in Volume 4, it’s available now.
