Magnum P.I. (2018) – Sudden Death, and Death is Only Temporary

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) helps T.C. (Stephen Hill) and one of his football little leaguers in Sudden Death. It first aired on 22 October, 2018, and was written by David Fury, and features Cyndi Lauper as a local lawyer, Vanessa Nero.

Young Makoa (Zio Junk) looks for help from T.C. and Magnum when his father, Honi (Sam Puefua) disappears, it seems he’s been arrested for murder. Despite Honi’s attitude, he cares for Makoa, and T.C. is convinced Honi is innocent.

Katsumoto (Tim Kang) has evidence in his homicide investigation that Honi is guilty and is working to charge him. But that’s not stopping Magnum and T.C. from running leads while Higgins (Perdita Weeks) tries to comfort and connect with Makoa.

Magnum finds that MMA fighters and performance-enhancing drugs are involved and that this is going to be a dangerous investigation for the two friends, especially when there are hints of an affair that may or may not have happened. Things get complicated when the murder victim’s widow, Brooke (Elizabeth Rohm) shows up, and more secrets come out.

And as the case seems to roll one way, and then the other, it may cost Thomas his friendship with T.C. (it doesn’t, but for a little bit it looks pretty rough on the group).

In the original series, T.C. helped underprivileged kids as well, but he was coaching baseball, they’ve changed it, unnecessarily, to football. We also learn the motivation behind his involvement with the kids, and the secrets he’s been keeping about his own father. First art history and dance, and now this, we’re learning a lot about T.C.

I love the appearance of Lauper, but sadly this is her only appearance.

Death is Only Temporary opens with another Robin Masters story, White Knight Red War, which apparently Higgins is reading to a visiting class, and soon plunges Magnum into a different kind of case, and introduces a new semi-regular, Shammy (Christopher Thornton).

The Shammy story is the B-tale, but it’s the stronger of the two. T.C. and Rick (Zachary Kingston) meet Shammy, a vet in a wheelchair. Shammy served in the Middle East, like our main characters, and consequently ended up in the chair. He’s been having a tough time adjusting to civilian life and is suicidal.

The pair work to connect with him and the tale deals with some serious issues facing vets.

Written by Gene Hong and Scarlett Lacey, this episode debuted on 29 October, 2018.

Magnum is hired by Henry Barr (Ben Vereen) who has asked him to investigate when he receives a letter from his first love, Elizabeth Cole (Alexandra Marlin) asking for financial help. All well and good, except she supposedly died thirty years ago. Magnum and Higgins are initially distrustful, but soon they begin to learn the truth about Elizabeth’s fate.

My journey with Magnum continues as I explore more of The Complete Series, now available on DVD from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
