Batman (1967) – How to Hatch a Dinosaur, and Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under!

Stanford Sherman doles out another tale involving Egghead (Vincent Price) and Olga (Anne Baxter), and it first aired on 9 November, 1967.

I don’t know if the series wrote itself into a corner with the previous episode, but this one picks up with Batman (Adam West), Robin (Burt Ward) and Batgirl (Yvonne Craig) all free, and there are no impending nuptials, and no wedding borscht.

There’s a brief thanks to Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton) for arriving just in time, and the story moves on.

Egghead is fascinated when he hears about a fossilized ‘neosaurus’ egg and he and Olga steal some radium in pursuit of a plan that says that with the proper radiation, the egg could be hatched! And then Egghead will be able to rule Gotham City, and the world, and finally be able to get married to Olga who is waiting for an appropriate dowry.

Is this all a plan of Batman’s from the beginning? I don’t know. There have been some plot holes in the series to date, but this one seems to have the biggest. The egg hatches at the climax of the episode, scaring Egghead, Olga and their thugs right into the arms of the police, but then it’s revealed that the dinosaur is nothing more than a Batman-in-a-suit.

As much as I like Vincent Price, and as much as I’ve enjoyed the series that was a little too goofy. Even Gordon and O’Hara (Stafford Repp) gloss over this hole with a joke.

Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under! is another goofy tale, this one written by Charles Hoffman. With an original airdate of 16 November, 1967 the episode has little to recommend it, barring some interesting fashion choices with Batman and the Joker (Cesar Romero) in their baggies, and a stunning bathing suit for Yvonne Craig’s Barbara Gordon.

Joker is back in town, and he’s got a new plan, he’s going to become the king of surfing! That will let him win the approval of the people, and will give him fame, and success, and be a personal triumph.

To help him do this, he is using a skill and intelligence transference device, which will allow him to take all of the knowledge and vitality from Skip Parker (Ronnie Knox), a close friend of Barbara.

As Joker’s plan begins to come to fruition, Batman is ready to take the fight to him, in this case, entering the surfing contest to best Joker and put him away (again).

Gordon and O’Hara get to dress up, go undercover, and try to use some slang, Batman in baggies is an iconic image, Craig’s bathing suit, and some really bad-looking surfing sequence; there isn’t a lot to really recommend this episode, it’s silly, goofy, and even for the series isn’t the best it had to offer.

As the episode gets ready to close out, we get a look at the unnamed villains for the next episode, they are kitted out like Sherlock Holmes, the story seems to be set in Londinium (?), and are stealing snuff boxes… okay.
