Batman (1967) – Penguin Is a Girl’s Best Friend, Penguin Sets a Trend, and Penguin’s Disastrous End

We find ourselves with another three-part episode. This one features the return of both The Penguin (Burgess Meredith) and Marsha, Queen of Diamonds (Carolyn Jones). Written by Stanford Sherman this story really puts Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) through it. The first episode aired on 26 January, 1967.

This time around the Dynamic Duo attempts to foil Penguin’s bank heist, only to discover that it’s a film set, with Penguin as a director. To stay out of trouble, the Caped Crusaders agree to sign on to perform in Penguin’s film, which fits right with the arch-villain’s plan.

He has cast Marsha as the love interest and has penned a heavy love scene between her and Batman, with Marsha using a potion on her lips to sway Batman to their side. They fail, and the Gotham City Decency Committee is less than happy with the scene anyway, censoring Penguin’s creativity.

The final sequence that Penguin plans to shoot is in a museum, and Batman discovers that a pair of priceless suits of armour has been stolen!! This leads to a round of fisticuffs that, of course, sees the pair captured by Penguin and his thugs, and strapped to a catapult, preparing to be thrown across the city!

The second episode, Penguin Sets a Trend, aired the following week on 1 February, 1967. And how will Batman and Robin survive being flung by the catapult? Why with the remote control of the batmobile of course!

Surviving the attempt on their lives, the pair have to find a way to get back in Penguin’s good graces and continue working on the film to learn what has happened to the armour. And while they’re working on that, Penguin and Marsha are conniving to break into an army base, and steal some secret plans!

Batman and Robin are hanging for almost the entire episode, trapped in suits of armour, and held in place by a powerful magnet, but they are able to escape just in time for the climax of the episode!

They pair chase after Penguin, racing along in the batmobile still in their suits of armour, and this leads right to the second cliffhanger. After a round of Donkey Kong, the Penguin gets the upper hand on the duo and sells them to a scrap metal yard to be crushed.

How will the Dynamic Duo survive this one? It seems they are about to be turned into a small cube of metal with nothing to stop their demise!

Penguin’s Disastrous End brought the story to its conclusion the following night on 2 February, 1967.

Our heroes survive the scrapyard with some air pumps and cutting torches and are now ready to go after Penguin and put him away once and for all (at least until next time). But Penguin is almost ready to put his scheme into action, and he may have an escape plan ready in case things go sideways.

Marsha helps out by beguiling security men while Penguin works on stealing a load of gold bullion. So he’s used the armour to steal the plans from the army base, and then used the gold to make a tank from the plans!

And Batman and Robin are ready for him, giving chase in the batmobile and Robin gets to use the bat-zooka! This brings Penguin and Marsha to a complete standstill, and the trio of episodes to a satisfying conclusion.

I don’t think Jones gets as much to do as she should in these episodes, but Meredith’s Penguin seems to be having a great time ordering everyone around in a parody of a movie director.

Next time around, we’re introduced to a new Riddler?
