Wonderfalls (2004) – Barrel Bear, and Lovesick Ass

Jaye (Caroline Dhavernas) and Mahandra (Tracie Thoms) find themselves on opposite sides of an argument over Niagara legend and history in Barrel Bear. Written by Tim Minear and Bryan Fuller this episode was never aired which is too bad, because it’s damned funny, and features two fantastic guest stars, Louise Fletcher and Rue McClanahan.

Jaye is urged to ‘give it back to her’ when she encounters Millie Marcus (McClanahan), who, according to Mahandra and local legend was the first woman to go over the Falls in a barrel. But when she, Mahandra and Eric (Tyron Leitso) try to help her, they discover that Millie didn’t go over the falls, she was simply the public face of the event, which was actually done by Vivian Caldwell (Fletcher).

The friends are torn apart as they fight over the past, and Millie and Vivian are at the center of it as they figure out how to reclaim their lives, their past, and their argument.

But how will events play out? And will Vivian and Millie be able to figure things out together, or will fate take a hand?

The story brings Mahandra and Jaye back together, rebuilding their friendship, and Jaye finally reveals that inanimate objects are talking to her and encouraging her to do things, but of course, Mahandra doesn’t believe it – so friendship reestablished but the integrity of the series concept remains intact.

And in terms of the romantic subplot with Eric, the series is moving forward slowly while reminding us that there is a character we’re yet to see, Eric’s wife.

Lovesick Ass was penned by Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Harry Victor and Dan E. Fesman. Eric and Jaye find themselves helping a Russian bride-to-be, Katya (Magdalena Alexander) who is searching for her online love in Niagara Falls.

But none of them are ready for who it is… a thirteen-year-old boy, Peter (Spencer Breslin).

As Katya reels from the reveal, both Eric and Jaye find themselves getting closer as the discussions of love bring them closer and closer. As the pair attempt to straighten young Peter out and help Katya out, Peter finds himself crushing on Jaye instead.

But with all the things Jaye says about love and being romantically involved, Eric has a chance to connect with Katya which lets Jaye realize that maybe she is ready to pursue a relationship with Eric after all.

As they work to help Peter and Katya, Jaye discovers the truth of what has motivated Peter to find someone to love and then has to make sure that Katya gets a happy ending as well. But it’s going to be difficult to get them both there, but it’s going to be a very funny ride all the way.

This is the first episode that really leans into the romantic spark between Jaye and Eric, but you just know that with Jaye’s character, it’s not going to be an easy thing to figure out, but at least that first kiss is out of the way.

Man, this show didn’t get the shot it deserved.
