Lower Decks has been a gift for Star Trek fans, and Paramount Canada lets you bring home the Emmy-nominated second season on Blu-ray today. The series has been a join since its premiere, delivering comedy and in-jokes while still being Star Trek at its core.
Over the course of the ten episodes of season two, the lower decks crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos, Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noel Wells) and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) all grow, and continue to do so, even as they deal with Boimler’s transfer to the Titan under Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Shaxs’ (Fred Tatasciore) ressurection, and a To Be Continued ending to the season.
Spread over two discs, the season has a solid amount of extras including four commentaries on select episodes. In fact each episode has an animatics reel as well as the cast talking about one of the big easter eggs featured in that episode.
On the second disc there’s also a brief exploration on the show’s sound design, and how important it is to Star Trek ,as well as a half hour exploration of the growth and storytelling of season two, overseen by series creator and showrunner Mike McMahan.

Smart, funny, and filled with in-jokes and nods to aspects, events and characters from across the Trek universe, Lower Decks can swing from laugh out loud funny to making important commentary (which is something that Star Trek has always strived to do – so what if it’s a cartoon making you life while it happens?).
It also works to make everything Trek canon, and I think that is brilliantly awesome!
I remember enjoying the first season, and looking forward to the second, and by the time I was a quarter of the way through season two, I was excited for each next episode, and found myself whistling the theme, and that’s always a good sign for me when it comes to Trek.
The image and the sound are fantastic, the blu-ray allows for lots of freezing so you can search each frame and find all the easter eggs and jokes, and believe me, they are there, and they are worth the search.
I’ve loved Star Trek since I was a child, and this renaissance we’re having with the property has brought me a lot of joy, and Lower Decks, its cast, crew, and creator are a huge part of that. And like all other Trek, it boldly goes as it reminds us that the human adventure is just beginning.
Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season Two is available on Blu-ray and DVD from Paramount Pictures today! So beam on down, and pick one up today!
