Chuck (2011) – Versus the Hack Off, and Versus the Curse

Zachary Levi directs this episode of Chuck, which was written by Craig DiGregorio and Alex Katsnelson. It debuted on 9 December, 2011. Both Casey (Adam Baldwin) and Lester (Vik Sahay) are in prison for their individual crimes, though Lester has the place more wired (literally) than Casey who has to deal with some problems.

Meanwhile, Decker (Richard Burghi) suggests a deal to Chuck (Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski); if they can infiltrate a cult and recover a valuable, and deadly computer virus, he’ll arrange for Casey to be set free. Realising they will need help, so they recruit Verbanski (Carrie-Anne Moss) who has her own reasons for wanting Casey free.

When the team breaks into the cult, they quickly have to blend in, which means stripping down, and, hilariously, there are pixels added to cover the naughty bits. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg, because Chuck is going to have bring out his long dormant hacker skills to get all the parts of the virus… and Morgan (Joshua Gomez) reveals that Chuck used to be a great hacker, known as The Piranha (and may have been the inspiration for the movie Swordfish).

Unfortunately, Decker betrays them, while hinting that this is but a small part in a bigger plan that could be a problem for Chuck and the team. Verbanski gets immediate revenge though, by blowing him up…

There’s also a fun appearance by a couple of the leads from Community tying into the Lester subplot.

Beckman (Bonita Friedericy) places everyone under arrest after they break out Casey, but actually hides a message in her call as the team goes on the run in Chuck Versus the Curse. But Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) end up in the crossfire…

Written by Alex Katnelson, this episode first aired on 16 December, 2011. Chuck is afraid that there is a Bartowski curse that means he’ll have to leave his family to keep them safe. While the team hides out at his dad’s cabin, Awesome and Ellie have a night out that goes completely sideways as they play at having a romantic night together but end up being hunted by the CIA team led by Robin Cunnings (Rebecca Romijn) that is after Chuck and Sarah.

While Awesome and Ellie discover they are in over their head, and Beckman and Casey meet up, Morgan runs a mission for Chuck that allows him to reconnect with Alex (Mekenna Melvin).

When Robin grabs Chuck’s family, she demands the Omen, the computer virus, in exchange it for Ellie and Awesome, and Chuck has to make some dangerous decisions… on his own. Which causes some problems with he and Sarah…

And Robin is able to release the virus, revealing that it is part of ‘the plan’ because Chuck has apparently made a number of people very upset. And what does that mean? And who is in the prison cell we see being unlocked at the end of the episode?

We’re at the halfway mark for the final season, and there’s still so much more to come! Let’s see where our spycraft takes us next week as I continue with Chuck!
