Marvel Studio’s first female led superhero movie comes home on blu-ray and DVD today. Delighting audiences worldwide, the film introduces us to Brie Larson as one of THE most powerful characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Set in the 90s, the film gives lots of nostalgic nods to the time period while giving fans a wonderfully empowered character. While arguably not the strongest entry in the MCU, it still entertains, while not necessarily being your average origin story. Brie carries the film easily and delights in her portrayal, and pairing her with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is just about perfect (and it also serves as a bit of his origin story). It makes for a fun buddy movie as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel goes on her journey that brings her into the MCU fold.
As expected the blu-ray comes loaded with extras, including looking at Larson’s thoughts on taking the role, a look at the history of the character, her involvement in the MCU (and you just know that you want to see her hanging with the Guardians in space at some point). It also gives us a great little feature on Fury, which shows his influence through all of the films.
The extras also include a look at the visual effects, the directors, introducing the Skrulls to the MCU, as well as how important it is to finally have Captain Marvel up on the big screen. There’s also a hilarious 90s-esque profile on Goose (Chewie in the comics).
The disc also includes an insightful commentary by directors Anna Boden, and Ryan Fleck.
Rewatching the film, much like the rest of the MCU continues to be a delight, I love dipping back into this universe and seeing how well it’s been brought to the screen, twenty-two pictures in now, all forming a wonderful cohesive whole. Just wow.
Just as importantly, the MCU movies continue to be eminently entertaining, and Captain Marvel falls nicely into the shared universe of the films, and Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers is a fantastic addition to that expanding realm.
It goes without saying that both the sound and the picture is top-notch, and the visual effects continue to be top of the game. This is a great introduction to the character, spins the film version of Nick Fury away from established comics canon, as well as other characters and situations, which opens up the MCU into an all new way.
Marvel Studio’s Captain Marvel touches down on blu-ray and DVD today! The MCU continues to expand and is still entertaining and wowing us. I cannot wait for what comes next!
