For some people, it’s Christmas, for others, it’s the smell of freshly sharpened pencils signifying the start of another school year… this weekend, is one of my favorite celebrations… Fan Expo.
Sue and I have been very lucky in not only our attendance as fans, but in our coverage as media of Fan Expo. We’ve had a very healthy relationship with Fan Expo since The Mind Reels came into existence, and have been lucky enough to chat with some amazing people, Robert Englund, Michael Rooker, Laura Vandervoort, Tony Todd, Tatiana Maslany, Aaron Ashmore, Grant Bowler, Graham Greene, it’s a long and amazing list, and just wondering who we get to meet and chat with this weekend makes me wonderfully giddy.
And on top of that, there is all the geekdom, the wonderful cosplayers, the Funko figures (yes, I am addicted), the photo-ops, all the things you expect to see, and then the surprising, and joyous things you don’t, those little fan moments that simply make not only your day, but the weekend for you.
I know what I’m looking for (shopping wise) this year, and it’s a very small list, of which Funko can be assured they are on, there is a photo-op or two that Sue and I may be taking part in (and trying to make unique in our own way), but it’s the chatting with all manner of folk that I find the most enjoyable, learning about shared passions, the breadth of geekdom and fandom that is on display, and just reveling in the awesomeness that is the experience.
I’m also delighted to know that I’ll be seeing some people I haven’t seen in a while this weekend, so it’ll be nice to catch up, and for those of you who do know us, say hi! We’ll be tweeting, Facebooking (totally a word) and sharing pics, thoughts, and hopefully interviews all weekend long!
We hope to see many of you there, and hey…. who are you most excited to see?
