Killjoys S01E03 – The Harvest

Space’s new hit series, Killjoys, continues tonight, introducing us to more world-building, filling out the lead characters even more, and having a good time doing it. Minor spoilers for tonight’s show, so forewarned is forearmed…

There’s some tension right from the off, as D’Avin (Luke Macfarlane) not only gets accepted to the RAC, but is accepted as a level four, outranking John (Aaron Ashmore) who is a three and has been working with Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) for 6 years. So, John is a little put out, which may be one of the reasons he takes the warrant to find a missing migrant worker on the planet Leith. As Dutch puts it, he needs a win.

But D’Avin isn’t fully cleared yet, he needs a psych eval, and Ducth recommends a local doctor.

And speaking of Dutch, we get a hint of the larger arc, as she interrogates the man she was to have killed (the assignment from the Red Box) about Khylen (Rob Stewart) and why he wants the target dead…

All of this is happening during Harvest Week, which tends to cause some serious partying and we get to see why the, now, trio get to drink for free at Pree’s (Thom Allison) bar… Which leads to an introduction to a very attractive doctor, Pawter (Sarah Power), the very doctor Dutch wants D’Avin to get rubber-stamped by.

So while things happen with Pawter, John and Dutch leave for Leith, both with separate covers, and infiltrate the work farm. John ends up working the fields, and is injected with an incendiary explosive in his ear, a safeguard to keep all the workers in line. Digging in, they try to track down the missing man, and the path leads them on a twisting adventure, especially after the discovery of a mass of buried severed ears…

While John finds himself getting deeper and deeper into the warrant, and the discoveries around the farm, D’Avin and Pawter have a bit of a combative thing developing, as he won’t let her complete a full examination on him, and she is well aware that he is taking some serious medication, and probably not for the reasons he’s telling everyone, including himself. There is more going on with D’Avin than we know at the moment, and it could mean trouble for our heroes…

The universe continues to intrigue me, and I like how we’re being introduced to all the different beats, politics, and how the RAC works. I’m still not a fan of all the music being used, but I will also admit that it is growing on me. The show is establishing its look, style, and method of story-telling strongly, and I’m pretty sure that I will be in this one for the long haul. As long as the stories, and characters continue to be interesting, driven, and fun, I’ll be there.

The only thing I would have changed with this episode is to have added more Lucy (voiced by Tamsen McDonough), that is one nice looking ship…
