Orphan Black S03E03 – Formalized, Complex and Costly

Orphan Black continues to wow, as episode 3 roared across screens last night on Space.

The series continues to be filled with amazing character beats, that continue to layer them, expand them, and plunge them into new directions.

Art (Kevin Hanchard) is still haunted by Beth’s (Tatiana Maslany) death, and his inability to do anything about it. He’s been harboring a secret for a long time, but he doesn’t have much time to deal with it as he gets plunged further into Clone Club this week, as he meets Cosima (Maslany again) via Skype. He  stumbles into Felix’s (Jordan Gavaris) place where Fe and Sarah (Still Maslany) are trying to take care of the dead Castor Clone, Seth (Ari Millen).

Chatting with Cosima and Scott (Josh Vokey), there is a nice Trek reference which made me laugh out loud, considering the interview Sue and I had with Josh…

Gracie (Welcome back Zoe De Grand Maison) and Mark (yup also Millen) are on the run. Mark reveals that he never went AWOL from the service, he’s always been working with them, infiltrating the Prolethians to observe and inform on them, and that he too is on the hunt for the original DNA samples for the Castor/Leda clones. In turns, they both go see one of Gracie’s fathers old contacts, a bit of a troublemaker named William Finch (Nicholas Campbell, YES!). Gracie intimidates him into handing over items he had been holding in trust, but upon a quick examination, it wasn’t what Mark was expecting, so he goes to see Finch himself.

As we check in with Donnie (Kristian Bruun) and Alison (Maslany), we learn they are cementing their new business, using soap as a cover, and continuing their election strategy. This leads to a quick confrontation with Marci (Amanda Brugel) and a fun scene with our friend Trenna Keating!!! playing Vera, one of the mothers in the neighborhood.

After the encounter with Marci, there’s a wonderful throwaway line from Alison… I need to cut something. I laughed so loud. That’s one of the things that keeps me coming back to the show, the characters, the stories, and the fact that there are great moments like this.

Tatiana’s body double, Kathryn Alexandre gets some time on the screen again as Alexis this week, so YAY Kathryn!!

We also check in on Rachel (another Maslany), who is recovering slowly from her injury, and learns that she no longer holds a position in Dyad, but may still be of importance…

Meanwhile, where Helena (one more Maslany) is being held, Paul (Dylan Bruce) and Dr. Coady (Kyra Harper) discuss the glitching of the Castor clones. They hope that the original samples, that are still eluding their search, can lead them to a cure to stabilize the Castors, and allow them to continue with the project. That, however, seems to be under review, as Paul is being summoned to Arlington to meet with The Director, and they are one mistake away from losing their funding…

Cosima and Scott turn Felix’s bathroom into a bloody mess as they cut up Seth to remove his brain, and upon dissection and inspection, Cosima confirms the connection between the Castors themselves and the Letas, they are literally brothers and sisters.

Cosima tries to tell Sarah this as she is about to confront Mark, after to revealing to Gracie the true nature of Mark’s existence. This horrifies poor Gracie…

And it seems no matter how dangerous the Castors may be, it also seems that they are beginning to drop like flies!

I cannot wait to see how things play out for all parties… 3 episodes in, and the season has me on the edge of my seat already…

Orphan Black airs Saturdays on Space.
