Trailer Tracks: Fried Green Tomatoes – Jon Avnet

Yet another entry from my Top 10 Films of All Time list is this wonderful film, based on the novel by Fannie Flagg, which spans generations to tell the story of the Whistle Stop Café and how events of the past can shape the lives of the future.  A lonely, unhappy housewife Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) befriends an old woman in a nursing home (Jessica Tandy), and becomes completely caught up in the stories she tells about the people knew way back when.  This film follows the relationship between Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker), and shows how it impacts Evelyn’s life years later.  It’s brilliantly acted by some of the best in the business, and one I never tire of revisiting.
