Trailer Tracks: The Black Hole (1979) – Gary Nelson

Today, we take a look at the original trailer for one of Disney’s Sci-Fi movies. I love this movie, there are a number of goofy things about it, but just as many brilliant ones, and the ending, something I didn’t understand much when I was a kid, totally works for me now.

Some of the effects haven’t stood up so well, but some are just as amazing, and  I think the main ship, the Cygnus, still looks amazing against the backdrop of stars.

The film had a stellar cast, Maximilian Schell, Robert Forster, Ernest Borgnine, Anthony Perkins, Yvette Mimieux, Joseph Bottoms, and the voice of Roddy McDowall, a brilliant score by John Barry, and some big ideas. In the end, it seemed like it couldn’t be decided if it was a family movie, or a big science fiction film with grand ideas.

The trailer, about midway through starts to give too much away, but everything else around it, I like, the glimpses we get against the green scanning grid work really well in my opinion…

Have a look.
