I spent my formative teen years growing up in my own island paradise, though like all teenagers, I didn’t always appreciate what I had. I think it also explains my love for Magnum, P.I. and Miami Vice.
As far as I’m concerned both shows were perfect embodiments of living in paradise, well, more or less, both shows seemed to have a lot of bad things happening in paradise.
So every now and then, I get the urge to revisit one or the other, and this time the adventures of Crockett & Tubbs won. I’m blazing my way through my DVD collection of the series, and I know the further I get into the series the less familiar I am with the show. When I was young I watched whatever eps I could get my hands on over and over again, the majority of which came from Seasons 1 and 2.
I know it’s hard to believe now, but at the time, the show was dirty and gritty, yes people get lost in the clothes styles (though I still dig Crockett’s outfits) and it also wasn’t afraid to end on a downer.
It also served as some of my favorite tunes to come out of the 80s (all of which have been added to my ipod) and oh, the guest stars in season one alone… Bruce Willis, Jimmy Smits, Ed O’Neill, Mykelti Williamson, Dennis Farina, Michael Madsen, Terry O’Quinn, John Turturro, Pam Grier, Ving Rhames, Joe Morton, Esai Morales, Martin Ferrero and Giancarlo Esposito.
In fact there was a field trip, wherein we traveled from our island (alright it’s Bermuda, happy now?) to a smaller one off St. George’s, and I stood right up on the bridge with the crew humming away Crockett’s Theme.
Ahh, the 80s…
They weren’t really so bad at all.
