Magnum P.I. (2021) – The Lies We Tell, and Dark Harvest

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) are approached by Elena (Elyse Levesque) to find a murderer in The Lies We Tell.

Written by Katie Varney, it was first broadcast on 26 March, 2021.

There are complications as Elena reveals that Eddie Benson (Jeff Weisen) she was with was not her husband, and while she wants justice, she doesn’t want it getting out that she thought about having an affair.

But there’s something going on here. Once the pair investigate, they don’t find a body, and find out that Elena may have been targeted. And were there other victims? The trail leads to another woman who reveals that Eddie tried to blackmail them with a sex tape.

When Katsumoto (Tim Kang) and HPD recover a body from the ocean, they discover it’s Eddie Benson. Who killed him? A former victim or someone else? And what happens if they come after Elena as well? All of it will lead Magnum and Higgins to the real baddies, and justice will be served, and maybe Elena’s relationship with her husband will survive.

Rick (Zachary Knighton) goes to visit Icepick (Corbin Bernsen) whose health is getting worse, causing him to be hospitalized and may have to make his goodbyes. Knighton pulls out all the stops here, and gives Rick some really beautiful character moments.

Suzy (Betsy Phillips), meanwhile, is putting a new drink menu into play at La Mariana and maybe, just maybe, Rick and T.C. (Stephen Hill) will approve of them…

Dark Harvest sees the return of Jin (Bobby Lee). It first aired on 2 April, 2021, and was written by Gene Hong.

Jin shows up to help Rick and T.C. prove a suit against T.C. (which was caused by helping Thomas out while he was flying paying customers around the island). There are some nice comedic stuff with the trio, but the a-story is really good, tying the characters in once again with the military service they did, and the need for vet support upon their return.

Magnum and Higgins is hired by Gina (Kelen Coleman), a vet in the same support group as Shammy (Christopher Thornton) to recover her stolen SUV, but more importantly, find her service dog, Atticus, who has literally saved her life, and keeps her safe.

As the pair look, there’s commentary on the power of a pet, as well as the support that many servicepeople need upon returning from deployment.

Of course, finding who stole Atticus and the car is only the beginning, it seems the car thief was trying to escape a Korean gang who was working for a billionaire in need of a new kidney and didn’t want to wait for a donor, instead, he hunted one down.

Magnum will be working on more cases on Thursday as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
