Avatar: The Last Airbender – Book 3: Fire (2008) – The Firebending Masters, The Boiling Rock

Zuko (Dante Basco) has joined Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) so that means he’ll be able to teach the Avatar how to fire-bend right?

Nope.

It seems Zuko has lost the ability to fire-bend. The group thinks it may be that he’s not using his hate anymore to power is fire-bending. So he and Aang will have to head out to discover the original source of fire-bending, seeking out information on the sun warriors and the now-extinct dragons.

Written by John O’Bryan, this episode was first broadcast on 15 July, 2008, and we are racing towards the series finale.

Things aren’t going to go well for the pair, as they trigger a sun warrior trap, and then have to win over the local tribe so that they can find a true way to use fire-bending. Together the pair have to go through a series of trials to prove themselves to the sun warriors, and the reveal of the masters is a very cool moment!

Can the pair find a way to win over the masters, and begin to learn the true way of fire-bending?

It’s great to see Aang and Zuko forming a relationship no longer based on being adversaries, but allies, and just when you think they can’t open the world up anymore, the series shows you something new and wonderful that gives the story an amazing kick.

A beautiful, smart, and strong episode.

The Boiling Rock was a double episode that first aired on 16 July, 2008. The first part was written by May Chan, while the second was written by Joshua Hamilton.

Knowing that the majority of their invasion force was captured by the Fire Nation, Zuko and Sokka (Jack De Sena) head to the Fire Nation’s most dangerous, and secure prison, Boiling Rock, in the hopes of finding their friends and family, and breaking them out.

But what if they aren’t there? What if they’ve separated the prisoners across a number of locations? Sokka gets a bit of joyous moment though when he discovers Suki (Jennie Kwan) in the prison. With some of Sokka’s unique planning, they are able to develop a scheme to escape the prison.

But at the moment of escape, Sokka, Suki and Zuko decide to stay and keep looking for information about their family and allies. New prisoners are arriving every day, and as the group develops their next plan, Zuko’s father, Hakoda (Andre Sogliuzzo) is delivered to the island prison.

The pair concoct a plan to take a hostage and use the prison’s gondola system to escape. A solid enough plan, but things are complicated with the arrival of Azula (Grey Griffin), Ty Lee (Olivia Hack), and Zuko’s (ex?) girlfriend Mai (Cricket Leigh).

Instigating a riot the group works to escape but Azula and Ty Lee may be an insurmountable obstacle for our heroes. But Mai might lend a hand, despite her broken heart, and the evil girl trio may be torn asunder once and for all.

It’s almost over, six episodes left to wrap everything up, and the stakes seem to be getting higher and higher.

Aang’s journey continues as I explore more of Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series on Blu-ray available now from Paramount Canada.
