The Doctor (Smith) encounters the Great Intelligence (Richard E. Grant) again as he continues his search for the Impossible Girl, Clara Oswin Oswald (Jenna- Louise Coleman). Written by Steven Moffat, the episode first debuted on 30 March, 2013. Things are strange from the off, when Clara is given the TARDIS’ phone number by an unknown…
Back to the Future: Part III (1990) – Robert Zemeckis
My last stop in the Sci-Fi Chronicles book is the final trip with Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) in Back to the Future: Part III. From the film’s opening credits you know this will be a different adventure, the triumphant theme by Alan Silvestri gives way to a stirring romantic…
Frank (2014) – Lenny Abrahamson
Michael Fassbender is the titular Frank in this amusing and entertaining dark comedy that is being released to DVD and Blu-Ray today from Magnolia Home Entertainment. The film follows a young, would-be musician, Jon (Domhnall Gleeson), and how he becomes involved in a rather eccentric pop band that is fronted by Frank, who never…
Marty (1955) -Delbert Mann
Ernest Borgnine stars as the titular Marty in this wonderful film recommended in the Great Movies – 100 Years of Film book following my screening of On The Waterfront. This is a gem of a film, lovely in its simplicity and honesty, and I can hear the echoes of it in my own life….
Tim’s Thirteen of 2013
So ends 2013, just like that! What a year! We have continued to grow and do so much here at The Mind Reels, and we’re hoping for an even bigger year next year! So I decided to throw together a list of the movies I most enjoyed this year, the ones that got to me,…
An Adventure in Space and Time (2013) – Terry McDonough
Even as I write this, the airing of the 50th Anniversary Special for Doctor Who ticks closer, and I cannot wait, knowing I get to see David Tennant, Matt Smith and John Hurt on the screen as various incarnations of the Doctor, as well as the return of Billie Piper as Rose (in some…
Doctor Who S07E13 – The Name of The Doctor
Steven Moffat pens the 7th series finale, and I’m a little divided on it. A lot of it almost seemed overly sentimental, as if it were trying to pull at heartstrings, and that kind of bothers me. It’s all well and good if you earn it, but I’m sadly of the mind that they…
Doctor Who S07E13 – Nightmare In Silver
If I had known last week during the teaser ad that Neil Gaiman was penning this week’s episode then all my worries would have been allayed. I just saw kids in the TARDIS and I was a little worried. I shouldn’t have. Everything in this episode seems to work on full thrusters, and so…
Doctor Who S07E12 – The Crimson Horror
We get a Monty Python reference, a nod to previous Who companion Teagan (Janet Fielding), a classic Bond Girl, Diana Rigg, playing the villain of the piece Winifred Gillyflower, the return of Silurian Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Sontaran butler Strax (Dan Starkey) and the enchanting Jenny (Catrin Stewart). All bundled up in a script…
