Micheal Keaton shines in Alejandro Innarritu’s Birdman. He brings a level to his performance that you know is based on personal experience, and delivers an Oscar-nominated virtuoso performance as Riggan Thompson, an actor who walked away from a billion dollar superhero franchise and is now worried about his relevance while being haunted by his past….

Magic (1978) – Richard Attenborough
Somehow this title has slipped through the cracks of my viewing, and I had never seen it before I threw it on for the next misadventure with Killer Dolls as featured in DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies book. Its directed by Richard Attenborough, written by William Goldman, based on his own novel, stars Anthony…
To Live and Die In L.A. (1985) – William Friedkin
I don’t know how it happens, but between the watching and the re-watching, I constantly forget how awesome To Live and Die In L.A. is. I know it’s good, I love this movie, but I seem to be consistently stunned every time I settle in for this one. Amazingly I didn’t see this film upon…
Topaz (1969) – Alfred Hitchcock
Hitchcock takes on Leon Uris’ novel Topaz in this film adaptation of the same name. It’s not quite on the level of a Tom Clancy techno-thriller, but the subject material, centring around the Cuban Missile Crisis and a Russian spy ring within the French intelligence community is pretty engaging stuff. Unfortunately, for me, it ended…
Chuck (2008) – Versus the Seduction, and Versus the Break-Up
Chuck (Zachary Levi), Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Casey (Adam Baldwin) are still dealing with the loss of the new Intersect, which means Chuck is still a high value asset in Chuck Versus the Seduction. Written by Matthew Miller this episode debuted on 6 October, 2008 and sees Chuck having to learn the art of seduction…
Chuck (2007) – Versus the Sizzling Shrimp, and Versus the Sandworm
Professional, spycraft, and personal get more mixed up for Chuck (Zachary Levi) this week as he tangles with a Chinese agent, and has his first stakeout in this episode written by Scott Rosenbaum. Chuck Versus the Sizzling Shrimp first aired on 22 October, 2007, and sees lots of humour and trouble arising as the stakeout…
City On A Hill: Season One – DVD Review
The Showtime series starring the incredibly versatile and always fantastic Kevin Bacon and SAG Award winner Aldis Hodge, City On A Hill: Season One comes home on DVD from Paramount Canada. The ten episodes tell an engrossing tale that follows a corrupt, but hardworking Bureau agent, Jackie Rohr (Bacon) form an uneasy alliance with the…
Hellboy (2004) – Guillermo del Toro
del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is the next big recommendation from DK Canada’s The Movie Book, and the What Else to Watch list is filled with his titles as well, all of which I’ve had the opportunity to watch and review prior to this. And then I saw Hellboy listed in there as well and had…
The Lives of Others (2006) – Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Sometimes I take forever to see a film. The next big title recommendation in DK Canada’s The Movie Book is the German film, The Lives of Others. I remember when this one first came out on DVD, and a few people i worked with raved about it, but I could never bring myself to take…
The Vault of Horror (1973) – Roy Ward Baker
Taking its cue from the EC and Horror comics of the 1950s, The Vault of Horror is an anthology film and is the next stop in John Landis’ Monsters in the Movies book, available now from DK Canada. While I’m still in the Vampire section of the book, this film only features one vampire tale,…
