Stargate: Universe (2010) – The Greater Good, and Malice

The Destiny comes across another ship, and Rush (Robert Carlyle) insists on going. Young (Louis Ferreira), who is intent on keeping an eye on him, goes with him. And the tension escalates nicely, in The Greater Good. First airing on 9 November, 2010, the episode was written by Carl Binder.

While Young and Rush head to another inevitable confrontation (what happens when he discovers Rush has a better understanding of Destiny than he’s been letting on?), other things are happening as well.

Including the ship jetting away from the Destiny, with no way to get back. To help find a way to save them, Rush requests help from his old friend, Amanda Perry (Kathleen Munroe), and he reveals all he’s learned to her, telling her that he doesn’t trust any of the Destiny crew.

He may also know what Destiny’s actual mission is, which could mean the intelligent creation of the universe by… some thing?

Ginn (Julie McNiven) and Eli (David Blue) are getting along very well, and she’s been asked to report to Earth (via the communication stones) about the Lucian Alliance, their plans, and possible upcoming attacks. One of the other members of the Alliance, Simeon (Robert Knepper), is less than happy with all she’s doing.

Tensions are high. But is there a way for everyone to work together toward this new goal; learning and controlling Destiny’s systems, and her actual mission.

And the rest of the crew finally get to see and use the bridge.

This series is a much darker and character-driven exploration than the other Stargate series, and it is working like gangbusters.

And that ending when Simeon goes to see Perry, who is in Ginn’s body…

Malice was written and directed by Robert C. Cooper. And reveals we had good reason to worry about Simeon going to see Perry/Ginn. This episode first aired on 16 November, 2010.

Rush discovers Amanda/Ginn dead, murdered by Simeon, who uses the gate to escape, with a hostage, to a nearby planet when the Destiny drops out of FTL. Rush, Scott (Brian J. Smith) an Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) give chase.

Eli is wrecked, of course, and is trying to find a way to slow the clock before the Destiny leaps again. Chloe(Elyse Levesque) may have the answer.

But none of this seems fair to do to Eli. Come on. The poor guy. And it doesn’t seem fair that Rush is and a couple more are allowed to go after Simeon. Sure he loved Amanda, but Eli loved Ginn, and he gets sidelined to trying to figure stuff out instead of being involved in the chase. Young is able to keep in check and on task.

Before her death on Earth, Ginn was able to pass on some intel. Simeon knows about an impending attack on Earth, and Scott and Greer are under orders to bring him back alive. Something Rush isn’t intent to do.

It’s a solid actioner of an episode that works very well, has some great location work. And Carlyle gets to shine in this story.
