Stargate: Universe (2010) – Intervention, and Aftermath

The second, and final, season of Stargate Universe got underway on 28 September, 2010 with Intervention. Written by series creators Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, the episode picks up where the first one ended, with the Lucian Alliance still holding hostages aboard the Destiny, including Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira).

It may be up to Eli (David Blu), Rush (Robert Carlyle), Greer (Jamil Walker Smith), Chloe (Elyse Levesque) and Scott (Brian J. Smith) to come up with a way to save the day.

The episode opens with a strange opening centering on TJ (Alaina Huffman) her baby and contact from the people they left behind on the earth-like planet. And that could be important, because she was shot on Destiny, and may be in danger of losing her child, and her own life.

So what’s happening on that planet? And the alien technology that they don’t understand and is keeping them alive.

Varro (Mike Dopud) has taken control of the Alliance following the death of their leader, and he forces all of the Destiny hostages to evacuate to a nearby planet. This leaves Rush and the others as the only possibility to save the ship and perhaps rescue their friends.

But there are also cracks in the Lucian Alliance. Rush and the rest come up with a plan, and it gets the Destiny crew reunited, and back on their way, with a couple of Lucian Alliance prisoners.

And what about TJ and that planet? She won’t be allowed to stay, but the baby can. And no one on the ship will understand or believe what has happened to her.

It’s an interesting season opener. We are led to believe that there may be more with the alien planet that they left behind. Those aliens who want Destiny are still out there. And there is still some tension between Rush and Young.

Strange things are happening out there in the universe.

Aftermath first aired on 5 October, 2010 and was penned by Robert C. Cooper.

Rush is finally able to get control of the Destiny, but soon enough problems and mistakes arise. Because after lots of wondering around the massive ship, it looks like he has finally found the bridge.

His brain has finally unlocked the code that he’s been working on since he sat in the chair. But he’s not going to reveal what he’s learned to anyone else. He is also interacting with his dead wife, Gloria (Louise Lombard). Is he dangerous?

He brings the ship out near a planet that is close enough for shuttles, but doesn’t notice enough about the planet’s information, which may put others in danger. The shuttle crashes, and lives are at risk, so much so that Young is able to come to the planet to take care of the injured man, permanently. It’s a heartbreaking moment.

Meanwhile, the story also explores the stories of the prisoners about the Lucian Alliance, and why they joined up. There are also other narrative and character arcs growing on the ship.

It’s going to be an uneasy ride for these characters over this last season. And the episode ends with secrets being kept, lives lost, and Destiny heading right towards an unknown object.
