I’m huge fan of the Snoopy vs. The Red Baron song, and this episode of Get Smart riffs on that.
Written by Mike Marmer this episode debuted on 28 September, 1968.
Maxwell Smart (Don Adams), 99 (Barbara Feldon) and the Chief (Edward Platt) end up in potato country to investigate KAOS new plan to sabotage the potato crop. Conveniently enough 99’s mother (Jane Dulo) lives nearby, and she has new neighbours, Siegfried (Bernie Kopell) and Straker (King Moody).
To deal with the problem, Smart may end up reenacting the classic Peanuts story!
I do like the fact that 99 mentions that Max should meet her mother, seeing as they are going to be married soon. And there’s some fun stuff as Max tries to impress 99’s mother, as well as trying to maintain their cover.
Now, they don’t use the song by the Royal Guardsmen, but we see Smart reading the comic! And Chief gets to come along on this adventure, and watching the trio play off of one another is a real delight.
We also get a reveal that apparently, 99 is in the family business. Her father was a spy as well!
The stuff with the planes is over way too quickly, but we are seeing more personal details of the characters emerge… perhaps they mean to go through with the wedding!
Closely Watched Planes was written by Chris Hayward, Allan Burns, Arne Sultan and Leonard Stern. It was first broadcast on 5 October, 1968.
Apparently the airliner set in the previous episode worked so well, they brought it back for this one. CONTROL couriers are disappearing from airlines, Maxwell Smart is assigned as the next courier to figure out what happened. Will he disappear too?
99 and Smart reveal to the Chief that they plan to get married. He’s not keen on it as it violates CONTROL regulations about agents fraternizing. But he has no problems sending them out on this mission together. He does get them permission to get married however. If they survive the mission – which is packed with KAOS agents!
It’s a goofy episode with lots of gadgets and spycraft that seems to be bigger than some we’ve seen before.
The airplane set is a little goofy, there’s no sense of motion, or constraint due to size. But it’s still a pretty fun ride. Though it’s not a flight I would want to take!

The Secret of Sam Vittorio riffs on Bonnie and Clyde as Max and 99 take on the roles of Connie and Floyd to learn the location of the ex-cons’ mentor’s stolen loot!
Written by Hayward, Burns, Sultan and Stern, it first aired on 12 October, 1968.
Conveniently, Smart and 99 are dead ringers for the crooks, so they are able to ease into the roles easily. Are they able to hunt down Sam Vittorio (J. Carrol Naish) and convince the old man that they are Connie and Floyd? Will they be able to recover all the stolen cash?
A faked prison escape helps, but will it be enough?
The episode opens with a hilarious film introduction, documenting the misadventures and crimes of Connie and Floyd.
And what happens when the real Connie and Floyd escape from prison for real, and show up at Vittorio’s? Confusion, mishaps, and wackiness will ensue. But will there be any money to recover? Or does crime truly not pay?
I liked how this one started it out, but it ends rather run of the mill, though we do find out something.
According to 99 the wedding is only a few weeks away. Are we going to see it?
