David Koepp has his fingerprints on some of the biggest movies ever, he’s scripted some very succesful films. You know he can tell a story. His novel, Cold Storage has been on my to be read shelf for quite some time now. So long that it seems he’s had time to make a movie version before I could get to it, delivering the script for a rollicking and fun film.
Cold Storage, the movie, opens in cinemas today, and it is a ride!
Liam Neeson is Robert Quinn, a a federal agent who handles biological and virological problems. And iit seems one that came down in Skylab decades ago is about to cause a problem today.
In a converted CDC and military base, affable and loquacious Travis (Joe Keery) is eking out an existence. The base has been converted into storage units, and he and his fellow employee, Naomi (Georgina Campbell) are in for a tough night.
Not only is their boss a tool, there is a break in one of the locked away, hidden containment units far below the surface. A fungal virus has gotten out, and what follows is a violent, hilariously and deliciously gross comedy-horror ride.
Animals and bodies are reanimated as the fungus invades them, intent only on spreading, and Travis and Naomi may not have the skills needed to survive.

Quinn is on his way, but will he get there in time?
Frequently laugh-out-loud funny, and filled with gross out moments, Cold Storage is easily able to walk the line between horror and comedy. Keery is in familiar territory, and navigates it with an ease that makes it a delight to follow him on the adventure. Keeery has a real knack for comedy, and he just seems to be having a great time on screen.
Pairing him with Campbell who is charming as the new girl at work makes for a really enjoyable coupling, and there’s a nice chemistry between them. I quite like the pair of them together.
Neeson is at a wonderful stage in his career when he is able to do both action and comedy, and to see him dipping his toe into horror is a lot of fun.
The movie rolls along at breakneck speed. It’s not going to win any Academy Awards, but damn if it isn’t fun. It’s just loud, funny, bloody and gross.
This is one to go into and have fun with. Grab your popcorn, kick back, and just enjoy the ride. Koepp knows how to craft a story. The characters are developed, and have their moments and arcs, but that’s not why we’re there, we want to see exploding deer, gross body horror, and hear some hilarious dialogue.
If you’re looking for something fun, gross, and a movie that popcorn was made for, check out Cold Storage.
