Get Smart (1967) – A Man Called Smart: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3

KAOS is up to such a dastardly plan, it had to be turned into a three-parter to finish off the second season of Get Smart! A Man Called Smart is a trilogy of episodes, the first one aired on 8 April, 1967 and was written by Leonard Stern.

It was originally designed to be a feature film but was re-worked after the failure of similar tv properties making unsuccessful big screen debuts.

Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) and 99 (Barbara Feldon) are going to have their hands full this time. KAOS has a plan to dry up all the water in the United States, leaving the country at their mercy. How can CONTROL stop them?

The episode is jam-packed with action and gadgets from the off. Smart has an interesting briefcase.

Smart digs into the case, trying to track a formula that KAOS is after that will pull up their plan. Most of this is set in a hotel, which involves a number of simultaneous phonecalls and aliases, as well as an anonymous meet-up in the rotating doors. And a lot of actors hanging out in this hotel.

And Max has to play decoy which could put him right into KAOS’ hands and lead us to our first To Be Continued of the story that sees Max strapped down on a runaway stretcher racing right for a speeding truck!

The story resumed on 15 April, 1967. A Man Called Smart: Part 2, picks up where the previous episode left off, and sends Max after KAOS in a desperate attempt to stop their plan. He’s able to escape the truck, though he ends up in a manhole…

It also sees the President asking the Chief (Edward Platt) to relinquish command to Admiral Hargrade (William Schallert), who commanded CONTROL before the Chief was brought in. Unfortunately, he’s an elderly gentleman who may not be up to the job, and tends to fall over a lot.

While Max and the Chief work to get the Admiral up to speed, 99 ends up in trouble, getting grabbed by KAOS. Smart ends up in the same situation, and the Chief is helplessly locked in a phone booth.

But they are able to find and rescue 99, right back in the same hotel. But 99 has discovered a laundry service that may be a KAOS cover.

The chase leads them to a hospital and a confrontation with another KAOS agent that sees the Chief getting shot! Which leads right into the second To Be Continued.

There’s a bomb in a cast, a reveal about brothers, and lots of the Admiral falling over. How will Smart stop KAOS this time? He’ll have to wrap it all up in the next episode!!

A Man Called Smart: Part 3 aired on 22 April, 1967.

Smart and 99 are working to make sure the Chief is going to be okay. But they don’t have much time, as they still have to stop KAOS.

And it seems, there is a movie studio behind it, which explains why there are so many actors showing up and getting caught up in events. As they infiltrate the studios, they’ll have minutes to foil the caper once and for all, but it will take everything they have. Is Smart the man for the job? And who is the real villain of the piece? Who is the KAOS agent?

And this week, amongst the cast is Kenneth Mars, perhaps known best for his turns in The Producers, and Young Frankenstein.

This one is a lot of fun, the story could have been developed a little more, especially if they are going to spread it over three episodes. But for the most part, it is highly enjoyable and has lots of great bits.

Lets see what happens when we start season three next week!
