Blood Red Sky (2021) – Peter Thorwarth

It’s taken me a while to get to this one, but once the mood hit I was ready for it. And man, I got a kick out of it. It plays with some tropes, has an exploration of motherhood and parenting, and oh yeah, let’s enjoy the blood and gore.

Nadja (Peri Baumeister) and her son, Elias (Carl Anton Koch) are taking a night flight from Germany to New York so that Nadja can undergo a medical procedure. But it’s not quite your usual med stuff, it seems Nadja is… a vampire.

Through the plane’s flight, we see how Nadja was attacked, bitten, and transformed, but worked to maintain focused on her child. Her drive to be Elias’ mother keeping her in touch with her diminishing humanity. Perhaps this medical procedure can help her.

Unfortunately, there’s going to be a complication during the flight – terrorists. Led by Berg (Dominic Purcell), the terrorists aren’t quite ready for when things go sideways. And it’s going to get violent, bloody, tense, and honestly, wonderfully executed.

A German film, so be ready for those subtitles, this one isn’t afraid to go dark, even while it’s having a lot of fun doing it. Point in case is one of Berg’s cohorts, the absolutely psychotic, Eightball (Alexander Scheer).

The practical and makeup effects are great, and you can see Nadja’s transformation taking a stronger hold on her, the more she kills and drinks blood. Can she hold on to her humanity and save her son?

Some great sequences play out as the film plays with the usual vampire tropes, I quite like the use of sunlight in a particular sequence.

It’s bloody, fun, and bloody fun. Sure, the exploration of being trapped on a plane as terrible things happen has been done a number of times, some better than others, but I found this one really entertaining. There are throughlines for a number of characters, but don’t get too attached to any one character. This one has a brutally high body count.

The vampire makeup put me in mind of 30 Days of Night, and Nadja is just as brutal once she gets going. But what happens when she bites someone and doesn’t kill them? Yup, more vampires.

Lots of vampires on a plane, in the middle of the night, and nowhere for passengers to escape to. Oh boy, this is a fun ride.

I got a lot out of this one, it was fun, dark and violent. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need. And in this case, for me, it worked liked gangbusters. If you like vampires this one is definitely worth a watch.
