Smallville (2002/2003) – Skinwalker, and Visage

Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders wrote the teleplay for Skinwalker from a story by Mark D. Warshaw and the episode first debuted on 26 November, 2002.

After tumbling into an underground cave system, Clark (Tom Welling) meets Kyla Willowbrook (Amara Zaragoza). There’s a chemistry between the two immediately, and she believes that he may of some help, not only in her research into here Native American history though the cave paintings but also to stop LuthorCorp from destroying the entire cave system.

It seems there are stories of a hero on the walls, and a familiar indentation on one of the cave walls that would fix the hexagon key of Clark’s ship. Clark takes the device Jonathan (John Schneider) grabbed from the ship before it sealed. But it all ties back to a legend from five hundred years ago.

Things develop between Clark and Kyla, and in one moment, she realizes who he really is. Does that mean she’s doomed before the story ends?

But that’s not all that’s at work in the story, I mean, it’s right there in the title. So who or what is the skinwalker in this case? And can Clark find a way to stop LuthorCorp’s claim on the native land? And maybe Martha (Annette O’Toole) can persuade Lionel (John Glover) to leave the site alone. And can Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) help out? He helps out for his own reasons, saving the land, and working to discover the secrets hidden in the caves.

It’s no surprise that Kyla is the skinwalker, and has been transforming into a wolf to help protect her land. So of course, she’ll be gone by the close of the episode. And that’s too bad, because the love story here is really well done, and it’s nice to see Clark happy, and able to be himself.

Oh and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) gets a knock when she sees Kyla and Clark together, but also learns that Henry Small (Patrick Cassidy) is her biological father! Oh and Whitney (Eric Johnson) gets name-checked in this episode. Think they’re setting something up?

A solid episode that moves things in a new way for the series, there are secrets, losses, and thee mythology is building its own thing.

Hey, speaking of Whitney, look who is back in town? Completely unannounced, Whitney is back. But he doesn’t seem to be himself. He’s gone missing from his post, and Lana is thinking the worse, but now he’s home.

How will Clark feel about that? Especially with the way things have been progressing with he and Lana (depending on the episode of course). And what is Lana’s feelings for him now?

Visage was written by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer and first debuted on 14 January, 2003.

We get a glimpse of Whitney’s time in the service, and the effect it has had on him. But is it more than PTSD? He claims a loss of memory, and is eager to take up his relationship again with Lana. So what’s really going on?

Well, there will be another story thread from the past season that gets brought back in and wrapped up. Remember Tina Greer (Lizzy Caplan)?

And Lex finds out some secrets about Helen (Emmanuelle Vaugier) – she’s been meeting with Lionel, and he’s been paying her off! Or that’s what it looks like… so looks like another relationship is falling apart.

I do like the tying up of story threads, but I don’t care for the way Lana treats Clark in this episode. Still, it’s nice to see a Whitney wrap-up, and bid a goodbye to the character.

Having said that, there’s some questionable stuff in the episode as well; Clark’s ship saves him by somehow draining the toxicity from the green kryptonite? I’m gonna want an explanation on that one please.

I like that they wrapped up two storylines from the first season, and kept building their continuity.
