Stargate: Atlantis (2006) – Irresistible, and Sateda

McKay (David Hewlett) is organizing the harvesting of stargates so they can make an intergalactic bridge that will allow transit from Earth to Atlantis in thirty minutes instead of three weeks. But the latest planet they’ve arrived on seems a little… interesting. Lots of lovely women, and a bit of a cult.

Irresistible debuted on 28 July, 2006 and was written by Carl Binder from a story by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright.

Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), McKay, Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) and Ronon (Jason Momoa) arrive in a village overseen by Lucius Lavin (Richard Kind). With a name like Kind in the episode, you know there is going to be a bit of a comedy arc to it, and Kind shines as you would expect.

Lucius is in charge, and everyone seems to fall under his spell. Everyone but Shepard (apparently it’s his cold that is stopping the infection). And guess what is doing it? An herb that he’s accidentally stepped in, and he’s been using it ever since to get his way.

Watch for Julia Benson in this episode, she plays one of the lovely villagers, but will later be a recurring character in Stargate: Universe.

This one is definitely light-hearted, and honestly, Kind is just enjoyable. I, honestly, got a kick out of it, because Kind just goes for it – playing it broad and charming and all of our regulars just react. I found it to be a lot of fun.

The episode looks great and it seems to work nicely a a bit of a lark, I know some of SG-1 bothered me this week, but this one, it just delights me.

Sateda was written and directed by Cooper, and this Ronon story was first broadcast on 4 August, 2006.

Sheppard and his team are ambushed. McKay is wounded but able to escape. Sheppard, Teyla and Ronon however? They are captured. But Ronon bargains for his friends freedom, even if it means he stays a prison. But it’s going to get a lot worse. The Wraith have been summoned, and Ronon is going to be handed over to them.

He will once again be a runner. But instead of having any number of planets that they will hunt him on, they choose his homeworld of Sateda.

And the stargate there has been disabled.

But Sheppard and his team, even a butt hurt (literally) McKay are working on finding a way to track Ronon down and rescue him before it’s too late. And even after they find him, Ronon refuses to leave until they take care of the Wraith hunting him.

The episode puts Ronon’s past right there on the screen, and gives us a bit more insight into him, even as he’s being hunted. It also has some nice moments for Sheppard.

Overall, I quite like this episode. I like the character moments, and it definitely shows that the series has learned from SG-1, and knows that yes, we like the space adventure stuff, but its the characters and the stories that keep us coming back.
