Dick Donner directs another episode of Get Smart – Our Man in Leotards. With an original airdate of 20 November, 1965 the story was written by Mel Brooks and Gary Belkin.
It seems a new drug is being held by CONTROL, one that paralyzes its victim. There is a plan to use it against the Ambassador of Pinerovia, and Naharana (Micheal Pate) is the one who has stolen it.
Using Smart’s (Don Adams) new spycar, they race after him, but it won’t be that easy. Smart’s car seems to have as many gadgets as the DB5!
Smart and 99 (Barbara Feldon) need to find and stop Naharana before he can use the drug on the Ambassador. Naharana runs a dance troupe, and 99 has gone undercover in his group.
Smart is outfitted with a special ring that holds some of the paralyzer, and you can imagine that gets misused.
This one is fairly lighthearted, and has some entertaining moments. I just love the fact that this Donner directing. It’s wild to see some of his earliest work like this.
Some of this episode is a little dated, and while the paralyzer gag is meant to be funny when 99 gets jabbed with it, and Smart steals a kiss – it’s played innocently and even sweetly – today’s society may have a problem with it.
Beyond that, however, there are a lot of fun moments to be had, and it plays out nicely. That’s the beauty of these episodes – running at only twenty-five minutes they never really overstay their welcome, and if you aren’t a fan of one, it’s over and onto the next one rather quickly.
But keep Donner coming!

Too Many Chiefs first aired on 27 November, 1965. It was written by Gerald Gardner and Dee Caruso.
The Chief (Edward Platt) isn’t who he appears to be. He’s been replaced with a master of disguise who is on the hunt for a defector from KAOS!
Tanya Lupescu (Susanne Cramer) has turned on KAOS, and the Chief, Smart and 86 work to keep her safe. This leads to a hilarious opening in a hotel with a standoff between agents.
Once Tanya is safely under CONTROL’s protection, KAOS goes to work on eliminating her once and for all. She’s also got eyes for Smart, and 99 is less than thrilled by that.
There’s some fun stuff with the Cone of Silence, but even more when there ends up being two Chiefs in Smart’s apartment, and one of them is the assassin!
There’s some funny stuff in this one. I like seeing Platt doing a little more. And I like the stuff with Tanya, which plays into the whole superspy romance angle, and feeds the romantic tension between Smart and 99.

My Nephew the Spy sees KAOS running some of their undercover operations out of a shoe store, and Smart’s unsuspecting family inadvertently helping out.
Written by Arne Sultan and Marvin Worth, this episode was first broadcast on 4 December, 1965.
Smart is trailed from the shoe store by Victor (Conrad Janis), who is determined to eliminate Smart. And all of it happens with Smart’s Uncle (Charles Lane) and Aunt (Maudie Prickett) around. Chief orders him to deactivate all the safeguards in his apartment, because his relatives can’t learn his true nature.
Victor arrives before his Uncle, and Smart has to keep him in check. But you know that isn’t going to work out as smoothly as CONTROL would like.
This one wasn’t my favorite of the bunch this week. I did like seeing Janis, I remember him fondly from Mork & Mindy. There’s also a series of fisticuffs, something that doesn’t seem to usually happen in a Get Smart episode, or at least not to date.
I personally hope we don’t see his uncle and aunt again, it just doesn’t work. The idea is sound, and has been done a number of times,
