On October 17, 2004, eighteen months after that heartbreaking ending to the series, Farscape returned to screens. The Peacekeeper Wars was a two night miniseries written by series creator Rockne S. O’Bannon and David Kemper.
Brian Henson directs the first feature length episode that sees John Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) reassembled, literally, by a diagnosan. Will the baby be ok? After a fashion thanks to Rygel (voiced by Jonathan Hardy).
The gang is thrown together quickly, Chiana (Gigi Edgley) has her vision back, but delivers news alongside Grunchik (Hugh Keays-Byrne), an interstellar war has broken out between the Peacekeepers and the Scarrans.
Scorpius (Wayne Pygram) with Sikozu (Raelee Hill) and Braca (David Franklin) at his side is aware that Crichton has returned to life, and goes after him. But so do the Scarrans.
And of course, right before the pair can finally tie the knot, guess who shows up?
There are reveals about all the characters, upping the stakes for everyone – not really a surprise as the series works to wrap up all the narrative and character arcs. Noranti (Melissa Jaffer) learns who the aliens are that inhabit the world our heroes ended up on, and where they got blasted.
There are wonderful character moments, great action beats, and it’s wonderful to see everything even more Farscape than before! Everything is amped up to the nth degree, including the pregnancy.
There’s lots of fun seeing the characters playing off one another, and it’s wonderful seeing the gang back together! Jool (Tammy Macintosh) shows up and is able to help the gang with the Eidolons, and help discover the truth behind who The PeaceKeepers were meant to be, and can be again.
But when the Scarrans show up and wreak havoc… well things aren’t going to go well. And the body count may be really high before the end of the ride.
Crichton takes the Scarran Emperor (Duncan Young) to see Einstein (John Bach) after everyone is captured and held by the Scarrans. He attempts to convince the Emperor that Crichton cannot make wormhole weapons.
We are left thinking D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe) and Chiana are dying in open space, Grayza (Rebecca Riggs) is determined not to give up to the Scarrans, and everything seems frelled!
There’s a strange sound issue caused by filming at a faster frame rate, and it takes a while to get used to. And there’s some new makeup choices which causes some of the characters to look different from what we’re used to. But it’s still Farscape baby!
Next time, we finish up the mini-series and will be bidding adieu to Moya and the gang. But what an amazing ride it has been.
