Northern Exposure (1995) – Buss Stop, and Ursa Minor

Buss Stop was penned by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess. It debuted on 24 April, 1995.

Michelle (Teri Polo) is mounting a production of Bus Stop but runs into problems. Ron (Doug Ballard) wants Erick (Don McManus) to be cast and as a way of making sure it happens, pays Michelle the rest of the money she’ll need to mount the show.

Shelly (Cynthia Geary) is upset that she’s not cast as the female lead.

And will Chris (John Corbett) have issues when he needs to kiss Maggie (Janine Turner) on stage. and it may be a confrontation of his own growing feelings for Maggie, it’s serious, it’s not a fling.

Holling (John Cullum) drinks too much and becomes drunk during rehearsals. And Dr. Capra (Paul Provenza) is still working to convince Michelle to come back, but she needs her space.

But everyone in town has been bitten by the bug, and it’s fun to see the cast playing as actors. Marilyn (Elaine Miles) starts to worry that it’s all happening again. Which seems to suggest Cicely put on a show before, and it didn’t go well.

It’s true, Cicely attempted to put on Oklahoma! and it never opened. The problems that arose last time are arising again.

Can everyone find a way to resolve it and let the show go on? It’s done incredibly well, and this ends up being a delightful episode. One of the best of the season.

It’s just fantastic, and the way the Chris and Maggie story is moved forward because of it is done incredibly way.

Sam Egan penned Ursa Minor which debuted on 12 July, 1995 (three months after the previous episode).

Ed (Darren E. Burrows) finds himself taking care of an orphan bear cub that now, won’t leave him be.

Chris has guilt, because he’s been cheating on Maggie, in his lucid dreams.

Maurice (Barry Corbin) is working to increase the population of Cicely. How can he do it? Who can he convince to move to town?

Michelle, still separated from Dr. Capra takes up a job waiting tables at The Brick. And this may or may not help their relationship in the end.

This one is little and a little silly as the characters continue their exploration of the self, and their journey forward. Ed deals with parenting, Michelle struggles to find herself, and isn’t quite ready to reconnect to Capra, and Maggie and Chris – there are some problems there, or at least Chris has created some by chasing after his lucid dreaming, and the things he’s dreaming of.

Course it doesn’t help that some of the things he says to Maggie when he thinks he’s dreaming are pretty horrible. Will Chris find a way to sort himself out and not screw up this thing with Maggie?

Next week, we finish the series. It comes to a close after six seasons.
