Farscape (2003) – Mental as Anything, and Bringing Home the Beacon

Mark Saraceni pens Mental as Anything, which first debuted on 20 January, 2003.

We get a wrap-up of D’Argo’s (Anthony Simcoe) series long quest to bring justice to his wife’s murderer. But it doesn’t quite work as well as it should, and definitely doesn’t feel quite as epic as it should.

D’Argo, Crichton (Ben Browder), Scorpius (Wayne Pygram), and Rygel (voiced by Jonathan Hardy) are taking some lessons in self-control, but things go pretty badly from the off. As it seems Macton (Blair Venn) the very man who murdered, his sister, D’Argo’s wife, is in the same class!

Silly.

There’s some nice stolen moments with Aeryn (Claudia Black) and Crichton as they are keeping their relationship intentionally secret and safe.

While D’Argo struggles with his past and vengeance, Scorpius works to deal with heat, and Crichton works to learn how to survive Scarran probes (and lots of torture).

D’Argo deserves better, and needed a stronger story to wrap-up something that has so consumed his life. Simcoe is capable of it, so it’s too bad that the story wasn’t tailored a little more strongly to his abilities.

In fact, the whole story feels kind of small. From the production design to its execution, it just lacks sweep.

That’s not to say this is a terrible episode, but it’s not quite as solid as what we’ve come to expect from Farscape stories that have an emotional punch like this one does. And Macton does get some karmic comeuppance, which is good.

And Scoprius warns Crichton about the fact that the Peacekeepers may know where Earth is thanks to Grayza’s (Rebecca Riggs) little shape-changing friend.

They are raising the stakes, as we begin our rush towards the season (and series finale).

Bringing Home the Beacon sees what the girls were up to while the boys were off getting their training. Written by Carleton Eastlake, this episode was first broadcast on 27 January, 2003.

Aeryn and the rest head out to investigate a dead leviathan hoping to buy and secure a beacon that will disguise Moya’s identity. And guess what just happens to be going on? Aeryn and Sikozu (Raelee Hill) stumble on a meeting between the Peacekeepers and Scarrans!

Grayza is wheeling and dealing in an attempt to cement some Scarran help. is it all Peacekeeper plans or is she working on her own?

Aeryn and Sikozu eavesdrop on the whole thing, and it doesn’t bode well for them, their friends, or the galaxy at large. But will the Scarrans and Peacekeeper work together, or do they not trust one another.

Grayza and Braca (David Franklin) find themselves betrayed as the Scarrans are interested in only their own galactic conquest.

It’s a sharply written episode, and I love Aeryn heavy episodes, especially when she gets to be all action-oriented.

This is a great episode! It pushes the series narrative forward, has some interesting moments for the characters and Chiana (Gigi Edgley) is delightfully sexy as always.

And I can’t explain how happy it makes me to see Aeryn and Crichton back together. But wow, there’s a helluva ending on this one!! Where the hell is Aeryn?
