Stargate: Atlantis (2005) – Runner, and Duet

When a gate team finds a dead Wraith with indications that Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks) may have killed it, Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), McKay (David Hewlett) and Lorne (Kavan Smith) head out to see if they can track him down.

Problems will arise.

Written by Robert C. Cooper, Runner debuted on 29 July, 2005.

Problems start before the team even leaves the City. Sheppard clashes with Caldwell (Mitch Pileggi) over how to proceed with Ford. And once they arrive on the planet, McKay and Lorne get caught by Ford, who tries to convince them he’s fine.

Unfortunately, Ford seems a little unstable. Or a lot. Francks does a nice job of making the character both scary and sympathetic.

Teyla and Sheppard meanwhile are being introduced to a new recurring character, who will become a series regular… Ronan (Jason Momoa).

Both Ford and Ronan are on the run, though for different reasons. Ronan was captured during a culling, and was being fed on, before they placed a tracking device on him, so they can hunt him for sport.

Enter Carson (Paul McGillion) who is recruited to remove the tracker from Ronan before the Wraith show again. And can they save Ford as well? Or is their friend too far gone?

And it seems a little on the nose that Ford and Ronan end up fighting – as if Francks and Momoa are fighting for recurring character status. Ford throws himself into a Wraith culling beam, so he boards one of their ship to escape.

And Ronan? He learns that his entire planet has been wiped out by the Wraith – so I guess that means he may be hanging around for awhile?

Duet was penned by Martin Gero, and it was first broadcast on 5 August, 2005.

While exploring a planet, McKay, Beckett and Cadman (Jaime Ray Newman) a Wraith dart arrives! McKay and Cadman are scanned by a Wraith beam, but the Dart is shot down before it can escape, destroying most of it. Are McKay and Cadman still alive?

There’s enough energy and power to restore one of the two, and when McKay is reintegrated, Cadman is too, inside McKay’s mind.

While Zelenka (David Nykl) and his team try to figure out how to get Cadman out of the Wraith’s memory banks, McKay has to figure out how to adjust with her presence in his mind. There’s some funny stuff, Hewlett is wonderfully comedic. And anytime he and McGillion share a team, it’s pure gold.

Cadman helps McKay with his crush, and his upcoming date. And Cadman has a thing for Carson which plays out hilariously. And there is also some great stuff with Claire Rankin’s Dr. Kate Heightmeyer.

Happily McKay figures things out in just enough time to save both his and Cadman’s lives.

And what is Ronan’s plan for the future? Is he gonna help out Atlantis? And is Weir (Torri Higginson) going to be okay with Sheppard inviting the warrior to join his team?
