Logan Lucky (2017) – Steven Soderbergh

Logan Lucky is a hugely entertaining, and laugh-filled heist film. Something we should have come to expect knowing that Steven Soderbergh, who also delivered the Ocean’s Trilogy, is at the helm.

There’s a lot of fun to be had with a great cast led by Channing Tatum. Tatum is John Denver-loving Jimmy Logan, a down on his luck blue-collar worker in West Virginia. He can’t make ends meet, and wants his daughter, Sadie (Farrah Mackenzie), to have a good life, even if it’s with his ex-wife, Bobbie Jo (Katie Holmes).

His brother, Clyde (Adam Driver), who lost his arm in Iraq, works as a local bartender, and discovers that Jimmy has the bare bones plan for a heist, which he’s posted on his fridge.

Believing they can make it work, they pull together the resources they need, including an explosives expert, Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), who is currently serving a sentence in the local prison.

There are twists, reveals, and surprises, and all you can do is buckle up, settle in, and enjoy, Surrounding the headlining cast are great actors like Jack Quaid, Riley Keough,Seth MacFarlane, and Hillary Swank.

The heist involves ripping off the local NASCAR track, but things quickly appear to get out of hand as the date needs to be moved up, and they’ll have to break Joe Bang out of prison, pull the heist and get him back in before anyone knows he’s missing.

Damn, it’s just a lot of fun. Not quite the romp of the Ocean’s films this one is still incredibly entertaining, has some whip-smart dialogue and characters, and it all works brilliantly. There are delightful character arcs, fun reveals, and it all plays out at an entertaining clip that reminds you no matter how closely you watch, you won’t get the whole truth until the end of the film.

Tatum and Driver are hilarious together, and convey a real sense of brotherhood. And Craig? With bleached hair, and a Southern accent. absolutely hilarious, and he seems to be having a great time doing it.

I like a good heist film, and this one is definitely one of the good ones. Great pacing, a wonderful cast, tight writing, and lots of twists, exactly what you would want from a heist film. It plays great, and the dialogue is just so damned good.

Check it out.
