Northern Exposure (1994) – Grand Prix, and Blood Ties

Maurice (Barry Corbin) is having Cicely host a a wheel chair race that he is sponsoring in Grand Priz. Written by Barbara Hall, this episode was first broadcast on 9 May, 1994. But the racer he is personally sponsoring doesn’t want to be the person that Maurice wants him to be.

While the town is gearing up for the event, Ed (Darren E. Burrows), as a shaman, makes a recommendation to one of the racers, Kim Greer (Kristine Kirsten) and clashes with the doctor who is looking after her.

And Ed, of course, begins to have a number of self-doubts about who he is, and what he’s going to do with his life, the Green Man (Phil Fonacaro) shows up to revel in it. Can he confront his own personal demon, and help Kim?

This causes a quick foray into a funny little encampment. And it is here, that he will taken on the demon of External Validation (Ben Reed) in the name of his patient.

And Marilyn’s (Elaine Miles) boyfriend, Ted (Tim Sampson), after a taste of success, becomes more obsessed with money and more success. And that’s going to cause some problems. He’s working on Lester’s (Apesanahkwat) new home, and is intrigued by the idea of accumulation of things. And he’s also not being completely honest with Marilyn.

It’s an okay episode, not the strongest of the series. I do like the little trailer park that Ed finds himself in, but overall, this one isn’t as solid as it could have been.

Blood Ties sees Ed organizing a Dracula film fest to pair with Cicely’s blood drive, something Chris (John Corbett) isn’t too keen on donating. He’s a little queasy.

But Maurice has turned the whole thing competitive by making a bet with a neighboring town about how many donations will be given. And who is the rep from the town that made the bet, Don S. Davis!!!

Written by Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green, this episode was first broadcast on 16 May, 1994.

Joel (Rob Morrow) is having issues with some of the residents, but maybe the problem is his. He can’t hit a vein.

While everyone sis donating, Ed also seeks out a P.I., Reynaldo Pinetree (Ronald G. Joesph) to help him track his birth mother, by using his ultra-rare blood type, and love a sandwich. He just wants the investigator to confirm what he is already starting to believe.

He believes that Jennie Hansen (Barbara Dirickson) may be the one, but is he setting himself up for heartache? And maybe a new friend?

And Maggie (Janine Turner)? An old flame shows up, Jed (D. David Morin) in town, with an eye on falconry, and the other on Maggie. Who isn’t quite sure how to take his advances, which includes a proposal! And she realizes she wants to be with Joel. And she needs a little reassurance from Joel on the subject.

Jed wants to pay Joel to get out of the picture, pay off the rest of his loan and complete his contract with the state of Alaska.

So what will happen? It’s a nice ending all around.
