Northern Exposure (1993) – Heal Thyself, and A Cup of Joe

Holling (John Cullum) is cracking wise in Shelly’s (Cynthia Geary) LaMaze class and is getting on everyone’s nerves, including Joel’s (Rob Morrow). And Holling has no explanation for it. Or maybe does. Maybe he’s a remnant of an older age, and isn’t used to discussing female bodily functions, and doesn’t think men should be in the delivery room, unless they are a doctor.

Can he make it up to Shelly, and another young couple he may have inadvertently screwed up?

And Ed (Darren E. Burrows) has a bit of an adventure with the heart in Heal Thyself. Written by Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, this episode first debuted on 15 November, 1993.

When Leonard (Graham Greene) asks Ed to come along on a house call, he finds himself a little involved with an affair of the heart. There is definitely something between Ed and Bonnie (Kimberly Guerrero). Something he may ruin by thinking it’s because he helped heal her, or something called The Green Man. (Phil Fondacaro).

The Green Man is intent on sowing self-doubt in everything Ed does. Can he and Leonard find a way to convince Ed to love himself, and cast aside his fear and bad self-image? And will he and Bonnie have a chance?

And Maggie (Janine Turner) realizes that she isn’t keen on her new washer and dryer, because she misses the social interaction of doing her laundry in-town. So will she find any reason to get rid of it so she can hang and chat again?

A Cup of Joe was written by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess. It first aired on 22 November, 1993.

Chris (John Corbett) is making use of Maggie’s plane as he wants to get his pilot’s license. Maurice (Barry Corbin) doesn’t believe he can do it, he doesn’t think Chris has the follow through. He even makes a bet with Maggie that he won’t make it. But he’s a little surprised by Chris’ dedication.

But will Chris’ body self-sabotage him? He has his first anxiety attack… ever! Can Maggie help him through it? Will he get his license? I really like his arc in this episode.

Ed learns some troubling facts when he discovers an old journal. There’s a reveal that a group of explorers some related to Cicely’s residents engaged in a touch of cannibalism to survive starving in a particularly bitter winter.

Marilyn (Elaine Miles) gets to play detective when the office’s petty cash is stolen. Joel doesn’t believe her when she names the guilty party. But what if she’s right?

And Holling and Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) are planning to go birding, and Ed is anxious because it was there grandfathers who were involved in the cannibalism! And it definitely has an effect on them while they are out in the wildm and may ruin their twenty-five year friendship once and for all.

Or can they put the sins of their family’s pasts behind them?

This is a fun and pleasant episode. I love how it takes time with characters, and lets them have their moments.
