Stargate SG-1 (2003) – The Changeling, and Memento

Christopher Judge writes this episode, The Changeling, which first aired on 28 February, 2003.

Teal’c (Judge) is being plagued by strange dreams in which he is human and where he is haunted by Apophis (Peter Williams) and the rest of SG-1 join him as firefighters. In the dreams, he is worried about an upcoming kidney surgery, he’s donating one to his good friend, Bra’tac (Tony Amendola).

O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is the Fire Chief and Jonas Quinn (Corin Nemec) is the Probie.

As the nightmares become more intense, causing Teal’c to collapse, Fraiser (Teryl Rothery) tries to figure out what is going on with him. But perhaps Teal’c’s subconscious is finding a way to deal with what is going on.

It seems Teal’c is dreaming for the first time, but he’s having problems trying to figure out what it all means. Perhaps an appearance by Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) will help.

As the story continues, we realize alongside Teal’c that he’s dreaming when the symbiote isn’t inside him. He and Bra’tac alongside countless free Jaffa were ambushed by the Goa’uld who removed the symbiotes.

Teal’c has been using Bra’tac’s symbiote to keep himself and Bra’tac alive by sharing it. But the creature isn’t strong enough to keep all three alive and is dying. Can there be a way to save them all? Enter the Tok’ra to save the day! Looks like a character change for Teal’c and Bra’tac is on the cards.

It’s a great episode, I quite like how Judge’s script shifts realities, and Judge really gets a chance to shine here.

Delightfully, the shoot used the fire department in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Memento sees the Prometheus going on a shakedown cruise with SG-1 aboard. Obviously that means something is going to happen!

Written by Damian Kindler, this episode was first broadcast on 7 March, 2003.

O’Neill and Teal’c are tiring of the drills run by Colonel Ronson (John Novak) but the real problems start when the ship’s hyperdrive is damaged. Luckily, there’s a planet nearby that may have a stargate. A short jump finally causes the ship to have to eject the hyperdrive core before it explodes, and it leaves SG-1 to try to make peaceful contact with the planet’s denizens, who may not be ready for the encouter.

They’ll have to help the people find the stargate that must be on the planet, but the government is less than willing to interact with them. There’s some diplomacy, some secrecy, and some conflict as both sides attempt to figure out how to deal with first contact. Not to mention revealing the true nature of the god the civilization worshipped long ago, Hopefully SG-1 and the crew of the Prometheus will be able to get home, perhaps with a new ally.

It’s a very solid episode and I like how the story plays out in terms of contact and discovery. and the discovery of the planet’s buried stargate. Fun!

Next time we finish off season six!
