The Galaxy, and the Ground Within (2021) – Becky Chambers

The last book in the Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers is just as engaging as the rest of the series, and once again, it got my a little teary-eyed by story’s end. I love the way she writes.

This time the tale centers on a few of the alien races we’ve encountered through the books, the Akarak, the Laru, the Aeluons, and the Quelin. On a remote world that serves as a hub point for hyper tunnels an odd group converges when disaster strikes.

A series of satellites have broken orbit and come apart, and a group of varied travelers on their way to as many varied destinations are forced to pause their trips at a little stop-and-go run by a Laru and their child.

All of them have their reasons for traveling, and all of them have their pasts, and though they are all different, through their exploration of blossoming friendships we see ourselves and our own interactions.

The characters are diverse and sometimes clash, but there is a growing understanding between them, even if they don’t agree on everything, they are united when something happens to jeopardize one of them.

Much like the previous books, I didn’t even bother to read the blurb, I just wanted to dive in and see where the world took me. And it was an amazing ride. Once again despite the backdrop of a vast and wonderous universe, Chambers tells a delightfully intimate tale. She lets us and the characters revel in tiny moments that make us realize how important and beautiful life can be.

The Aeluon who shows up in this book is Pei. We met her in the first book, as we traveled with Ashby and his crew, and she’s on his way to see him when she is waylaid at the remote stop.

I loved every page of this series. It’s fantastic. And I can’t wait to dive into her Monk and Robot books.

As soon as I finished the first book, I started recommending it to every reader I know.

I’m sorry to leave this universe behind. I would love for Chambers to give us more tales within the Galactic Commons, but I can respect leaving it on a high note and telling other stories. I will say this, I will happily add her to my list of favorite writers and look forward to reading more by her in the immediate future.

You should too!
