Everyone’s perception of the truth is a little different, and that’s going to be a problem for John Crichton (Ben Browder) and the gang when they find themselves on trial after a disastrous encounter with Crais (Lani John Tupu) and Talyn.
The Ugly Truth first aired on 8 September, 2000 and was written by Gabrielle G. Stanton and Harry Werksman.
After a troubling encounter with Talyn and Crais that ends in Talyn destroying a ship and starbursting away from Moya, the crew give their evidence in true Rashomon style.
Crichton, D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Aeryn (Claudia Black), Zhaan (Virginia Hey) and Stark (Paul Goddard) all testify what they remember happening, and they are all subtly different, giving different perspectives to the same moments.
Each version shows how the characters see themselves, and those around them.
So what really happened? Will the truth come out? And what will it mean for the guilty party? It’s no real surprise who the guilty party is, the character came back just in time for his story arc to be wrapped up.
But in the final moments, we all learn the truth about who did what and why.
It’s a solid episode, has some great dialogue as well as showing us the continuing relationships of all the characters, but it’s not an episode that advances the overall arc of the series. But damn, if it doesn’t tell a good story.
I am loving all of these wonderful little character bits, how the character have grown since the series began, and what the characters are beginning to mean to each other.
A Clockwork Nebari was written by Lily Taylor and first aired on 15 September, 2000.
A group of Nebari comes aboard Moya with the intention of claiming Chiana (Gigi Edgley) (again), and also delivered news that Chi’s brother is still alive.
They’ve already temporarily mind-cleansed Aeryn and Rygel (voiced by Jonathan Hardy) and are intent on getting their way. Crichton is able to resist the mind-cleansing thanks to Scorpius’ (Wayne Pygram) neural chip.
Pilot (voiced by Lani John Tupu) is resistant to the mind-cleanse but they are restrained. And Crichton, well he gets some serious torture… eyes… ouch. That’s how they mind cleanse someone? Gah!!
How is the group going to save Chiana from Varla (Skye Wansey)? and will she ever see her brother, Nerri (Simon Bossell) again? And why are they so desperate to get Chiana back to Nebari? What secret does she have?
There are secrets revealed about the truth of who Chiana is, but will they impact the rest of the series?
So, how do they get rid of the Nebari this time?
While there is some fun stuff with Crichton donning a surfer dude persona to pretend he’s been cleansed, but this feels like a small break before we start the run towards the end of the season. Stakes will be going higher!
