Stargate SG-1 (2002) – Nightwalkers, and Abyss

Carter (Amanda Tapping), Teal’c (Christopher Judge) and Jonas Quinn (Corin Nemec) go all X-Files in this episode while O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderon) remains off -world with the Tok’ra in search of a host to cure him.

Written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, Nightwalkers first aired 12 July, 2002 and was directed by Peter DeLuise (cameo!).

Carter is contacted by a scientist who namedrops the billionaire Adrian Conrad (Bill Marchant) who had previously kidnapped Carter when he wanted to use a Goa’uld to heal himself.

When the scientist ends up dead under mysterious circumstances the trio head out to investigate. And find a strange small-town where all of the locals are behaving strangely, and Jonas Quinn begins to think they may all be clones.

As the truth comes out, the team learns there are Go’auld and the NID at work within the town. They are using and controlling the locals, at night, to do their bidding. Which in this case, is constructing a ship, and keeping troublemakers, like SG-1 at bay. The Goa’uld clones are unaware of NID’s presence in town. It seems the secretive government agency is waiting for the ship to be finished, so that they can grab it and then take care of the clones.

This one definitely has an X-Files feel to it, and it’s interesting watching the group interact without O’Neill around to help out. Carter is able to command easily and comfortably, and the dynamics are a little different, but it works. And it’s fun.

It also gets all wrapped up nicely before the story closes.

Abyss was written by Brad Wright and it first debuted on 29 July, 2002.

O’Neill has wandered away from the Tok’ra base where he was recovering. But he did so under control of the symbiote that he was implanted with to heal him. The symbiote helped someone escape from Ba’al’s grasp, but the escape goes badly. After he’s attacked by some Jaffa, the symbiote leaves him. And that’s going to be a problem.

Unfortunately, he not only wandered away, he’s been captured by the Goa’uld, Ba’al (Cliff Simon) who is planning on torturing O’Neill for information. Information the symbiote may have known, but not Jack O’Neill.

Will O’Neill survive? Can he be rescued?

He gets some help from an expected quarter… is that Daniel Jackson (Micheal Shanks)? And despite not being able to help O’Neill with Ba’al, he has another plan, to help Jack ascend. But will O’Neill be able to do that before Ba’al tires of endlessly torturing, killing and reviving him?

Back at Stargate Command, the rest of SG-1 try to figure out a way to rescue their leader.

How is O’Neill going to get out of this?

Happily Carter and the rest are able to rescue him, but Daniel has made his presence known, he may be back…
