Farscape (2000) – Look at the Princess: Part 1 (A Kiss is But a Kiss), and Part 2 (I Do, I Think)

Moya is on the run, the leviathan runs with Zhaan (Virginia Hey) and Pilot (voiced by Lani John Tupu) in a hope of drawing off Scorpius (Wayne Pygram) by making him believe Crichton (Ben Browder) is on board.

But John Crichton is planet-side, after yet another emotional conflict and battering with Aeryn (Claudia Black), who is struggling with how she feels.

And she may have just missed her opportunity because Scorpius wasn’t fooled, and John is about to find himself embroiled in some romantic, royal and political machinations.

Known collectively as Look at the Princess, the next three episodes are a fantastic trio that really let our characters and stories breathe and develop. Written by David Kemper, A Kiss is But a Kiss debuted on 21 July, 2000.

On the planet, Crichton, D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Aeryn, Rygel (voiced by Jonathan Hardy) and Chiana (Gigi Edgely) find them caught up in the parties and celebrations. The planet is hoping to crown its new regent, but Princess Katralla (Felicity Price) cannot ascend until she finds a compatible genetic match. How do they find that out? The test is conducted through kissing… Crichton may never leave!

And Crichton may never leave. He matches with the Princess. Despite the fact that her DNA has been poisoned. Something orchestrated by family members working with the visiting Scarran diplomatic party, who have Scorpius with them.

The first episode ends after D’Argo argues for Crichton to marry the princess. Scorpius has promised to let them all leave, if Crichton remains and shares the wormhole tech.

What they didn’t tell him is that he’ll be turned into a statue for eighty years first! And he’s going to have to survive an encounter with the Scarran diplomat which leads to the first To Be Continued in the trilogy.

I Do, I Think was also written by Kemper and was first aired on 28 July, 2000.

There are attempts on the life of Crichton and Katralla, and that leads John to wonder about whether or not he should continue with the wedding plans. He’s blackmailed, he either marries Katralla or is turned over to Scorpius and no mater what he does, he may have no choice in the end.

We also hear Scorpius in Crichton’s mind, really proving that something is increasingly wrong with Crichton, mentally.

Moya, Pilot and Zhaan encounter a strange being Kahaynu (Hardy) who claims that he is Moya’s deity, he gifted the leviathan a soul. And because her offspring, Talyn, is a warship he has arrived to decommission Moya.

Aeryn attempts to reveal her feelings for John, but in the end, he knows he has to go through with the wedding, despite the fact that it begins with being turned into a statue for 80 cycles.

The episode ends with a final exchange between D’Argo and Crichton, and then, John is turned painfully into a statue, and we’re given a To Be Continued.

Two episodes into this trilogy of episodes, and I am loving every moment of them. It’s big, bold, funny, heartbreaking, everything we know Farscape can be. And now, I have to wait a week to see how it all plays out.
