Farscape (2000) – Home on the Remains, and Dream a Little Dream

Moya is out of food, and the crew is starving. Zhaan (Virginia Hey) in particular needs to eat. She needs to eat meat to stop her budding cycle. She’s been spewing spores around the ship, and everyone seems to be allergic, except Aeryn (Claudia Black).

Chiana (Gigi Edgley) leads them to a massive world-sized corpse in space, a budong. She used to live here, but of course, there are problems. She had to leave because she stole from her ‘friends’ and the only way Crichton (Ben Browder) and D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe) can get food is to earn it, by digging the Budong.

Home on the Remains was written by Gabrielle G. Stanton and Harry Werksman and it debuted on 16 June, 2000.

While D’Argo and Crichton work, Rygel (voiced by Jonathan Hardy) gambles and loses, and Chiana tries to make nice with those she betrayed and stole from. D’Argo is jealous of the attention Chiana is paying out, and Crichton is trying to get everyone organized to buy food so they can get out.

But there will be more trouble to come yet, because there is something dangerous prowling the dead Budong. And Aeryn and Zhaan may come into conflict when Zhaan’s spreading spores threaten to overwhelm Moya, and Zhaan begins to lose control.

This one doesn’t really add much to the overall ongoing mythology of the series. And the episode really does riff on some familiar western tropes, playing with them much like the title of the episode does.

Not horrible, but after the constant advancement of the mythology arcs, this one could have been a lot stronger. It does, however, end with a nice moment between D’Argo and Chi.

Dream a Little Dream takes us back to the time between season one and season two and shows us what happened with Zhaan, Chiana and Rygel. Written by series creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, this episode was first broadcast on 23 June, 2000.

Stuck in a shuttle pod due Zhaan tells Crichton what happened to her, Moya and the rest after the Gammak base was destroyed.

The short form is Zhaan is put on trial for murder, and Chi and Rygel are her defense. It just doesn’t really hold the attention. We know Zhaan can carry an episode, we know O’Bannon has created a wonderful universe and can tell a story, but this one just seems a little quiet and dull.

Quiet can be fine, but this one ends up being pretty, well, boring. Sorry. I do love these characters, and it’s amazing how wrapped up in them I’ve become since beginning my rewatch, but this one is just so blah.

But it may be positioning of the episode. I think we totally needed this one, to see what happened to the other half of the crew between the finale and the premiere, but for some reason, it just doesn’t work as well as it should.

We care about these characters, but this one didn’t hold my attention. That’s okay, because there are more adventures coming that will put the mythology arc, and continuity front and center!
