Farscape (2000) – Bone to Be Wild, and Family Ties

While Moya, her baby, and her crew are hiding out in an asteroid field to elude Crais (Lani John Tupu) and Scorpius (Wayne Pygram), Pilot (voiced by Tupu) receives a weak distress call begging for help.

Written by David Kemper and series creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, Bone to be Wild was first broadcast on 21 January, 2000.

They encounter M’Lee (Francesca Buller, Ben Browder’s wife) a strange alien who warns of a creature that wants to kill her. And now Crichton (Browder), Zhaan (Virgina Hey) and D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe) may be in trouble as well. Their shuttle is damaged and they won’t be leaving anytime soon. D’Argo is injured, Zhaan caught by the creature and Crichton is going to have to figure things out.

As a fun aside, Crichton finally realizes that Zhaan is a plant.

Aboard Moya, Pilot and Aeryn (Claudia Black) seek to find a way to ease the tension between Moya and her child, who seems to be part leviathan and part weapon.

In the Crichton storyline, it’s easy to figure out what is really going on. M’Lee is the real baddie, and the creature, Br’Nee (Marton Csokas) is trying to stop her. He’s actually a scientist working on the asteroid, the rest of his team killed by M’Lee who feeds on bone. But, of course, there’s a little more going on here than we first know.

Aeryn’s story, however, is really engaging, and once again shows how much the character has grown since her introduction. She begins to form a bit of a bond with the new leviathan.

There’s also a nice power struggle between Crais and Scorpius going on. And, despite Crais’ obsession with Crichton, Scorpius becomes the bigger bad.

Family Ties closed out season one of Farscape on 28 January, 2000. Written by Kemper and O’Bannon, this one pulls out the breaks as we head towards a heart-wrenching finale.

Still in the asteroid field, Rygel (voiced by Jonathan Hardy) makes a run for it in a transport, hoping to make a deal with the Peacekeepers to keep himself alive, even if it means turning in the others.

Unsure of what to do, the crew of Moya gather for a final get together, and begin to concoct a plan to save Moya and her child, christened Talyn.

Things escalate when Rygel returns to Moya, with Crais! It seems he’s ready to leave the Peacekeepers, or at least his ship while Scorpius is in charge. He also understands how Talyn came about and how to control him.

There are fantastic character beats and emotions are high as the plan the group concocts is desperate at best, and going to leave them in all in mortal danger. things go incredibly badly as we race to a cliffhanger ending that fans didn’t know would be resolved – season hadn’t been announced yet.

Crais steals Talyn. D’Argo and Crichton are floating in space after destroying Gammak Base. Aeryn is unable to get to D’argo and Crichton, and Moya starbursts away with Pilot, Rygel, Zhaan and Chiana (Gigi Edgley).

The series goes for the gut punch every time. What a way to end the season.
