Adam (Adam Arkin) and Eve (Valerie Mahaffey) are going to get married and all of Cicely is going to be involved. Written by Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, the penultimate episode of season three first aired on 11 May, 1992.
At the bachelor party all of the guys, including Bernard (Richard Cummings Jr.) who is passing through on his way to Russia, wonder about the differences between the sexes. It’s wonderful watching he and Chris (John Corbett) share radio duties.
Joel (Rob Morrow) and Maggie (Janine Turner) attempt to finish what they started in Juneau. Well to be clear, Maggie fell asleep, and then pretended it was amazing, and Joel behaved himself. When Joel reveals the truth to her, Maggie goes ballistic. This, of course, causes problems as they bicker, fight, and then they get closer to things again.
There’s an interesting dialogue about consent, and let’s be honest, Joel did the right thing. And after a conversation with Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) Maggie decides the best way forward is to make it happen (at least the want part) instead of feeling bad that it didn’t.
Shelly (Cynthia Geary) pulls out all the stops taking charge of the wedding, perhaps because she didn’t get one of her own. But it’s not going to be an easy go of it as Adam wants certain things, and Eve seems to be a little reluctant to completely commit to what is going on, throwing up fake contractions, disease worries and her concerns about Adam’s ability to provide. Which leads to a big reveal as she attempts to walk down the aisle.
And Barbara (Diane Delano) shows up to investigate a complaint about Maurice (Barry Corbin) and that reawakens all of his old feelings for her, but she’s just here for the facts. Or is she?
This one is all about the characters.

Cicely, the season three finale, walked away with three Emmys, Cinematography, Art Direction and Editing. It also won a Director’s Guild Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Show.
First airing on18 May, 1992, it was written by Frolov and Schneider.
Joel encounters Ned (Roberts Blossom), a 108 year-old man, who tells the doctor all about how Cicely was founded. We are taken back to 1909 and are introduced to Roslyn (Jo Anderson) and Cicely (Yvonne Suhor) who founded the town together as the Paris of the North.
All of the series regulars show up in different roles in 1909, and it is wonderfully entertaining. And as each of the characters shows up to listen to Ned’s story, they learn the beautiful truth of their small town and where it got its name.
I loved this episode, it was so well-written, looked gorgeous, and ended up involving all of the characters. It’s curious to see how the characters alter-egos in the past begin to transition into the characters we know in the present.
What a great way to end the season.
