Farscape (1999) – Til the Blood Runs Clear, and Rhapsody in Blue

While Zhaan (Virginia Hey) is enjoying photogasms thanks to some unusual light, Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aeryn (Claudia Black) find themselves in all manner of trouble in Til the Blood Runs Clear.

Written by Doug Heyes Jr. it first debuted on 9 July, 1999.

After Crichton tests his ship, combined with some Moya tech in an attempt to recreate his initial wormhole experience, another is created, but he and Aeryn are forced to land on a nearby planet due to solar flares (which are also having a pleasurable effect on Zhaan).

There they meet Furlow (Magda Szubanski), a mechanic who may be able to fix the ship, but has a high price tag, she wants his wormhole information.

Things are complicated by a wanted hologram posted by Crais (Lani John Tupu) for D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Rygel (Jonathan Hardy) and Zhaan. This pulls the attention of a pair of canine-like bounty hunters.

Crichton is going to have to show that he’s the alpha male (LOL), or at least bossier than the bounty hunters, and he and Aeryn are going to have to work together to figure a way off planet, rescue a captured D’Argo and find a way to negotiate with Furlow.

Aeryn continues to grow, and there’s some fantastic banter, and pop culture references.

Man, I forgot how enjoyable this series can be, and there are so many fun things to come, and I get to experience it all over again!

This episode also has some great location work, bringing strange worlds to vibrant life.

Rhapsody in Blue is a Zhaan story that was written by David Kemper from a story he developed with Ro Hume. It was first broadcast on 23 July, 1999.

When Moya arrives at a remote world they find a colony of Devians, who called to them through their dreams using avatars of people they care about.

On arriving they find that the colony has a hidden agenda, and wants something from Zhaan, as she has committed murder, and not only remained sane, but a priestess as well. They want to steal and use this knowledge to save their own colony, which is in danger of collapse as they all seem to be sinking into madness.

The Delvians there are using illusions to control everyone, and Crichton, who is on the planet with Zhaan seems incredibly susceptible, as they use an avatar of his ex-girlfriend, Alex (Darlene Vogel), and manipulate his memory to convince him that she’s there with him.

As the story continues, he and Zhaan may have to attempt Unity, a Delvian melding, that could help save her, but may cost her soul. Will she be able to come back from what she’s done?

A solid episode, and it’s fun to see Zhaan center stage, as she’s more than able to carry an episode on her own.

Next week the journey continues.
