I adore Aubrey Plaza, so I was more than ready to sign up for this genre-defying film. Plaza stars as Darius an intern for a magazine run by Bridget (Mary Lynn Rajskub) who sends a reporter, Jeff (Jake Johnson), Darius and fellow intern, Arnau (Karan Soni) to investigate an ad seeking a companion for time travel.
While Jeff only takes the assignment because it allows him to look up an old girlfriend, Liz (Jenica Bergere) and discovers something about himself along the way. Arnau is looking for life experience, but Darius makes a connection with the man who placed the ad, Kenneth (Mark Duplass).
But can he really travel in time?
As Darius gets to know Kenneth, she makes some discoveries of her own, and soon she realizes she is developing feelings for him.

Frequently funny, the film walks a fine line, with just enough to suggest that Kenneth is telling the truth. Is he being followed? Is he crazy? Is there any truth to what is going on in his life?
Plaza is wonderful, as always, and Johnson’s Jeff is crude, and funny as he helps Arnau, and also finds himself growing and connecting deeply with Liz. But what will it all mean in the end?
Sharply written, with lots of great character beats, as well as reveals that characters aren’t perfect, or just good or bad, but flawed, and each character gets a fully realized arc before the story comes to its conclusion.
This kind of role perfectly suits Johnson’s performance style, and paired with Plaza, the film just works brilliantly. I found myself engaged with the characters, and curious to see how the story plays out. There didn’t seem to be a lot of little details to hint at strange temporal possibilities but the character work is so much fun.
This one was a delight, and it’s obvious to see that Trevorrow knows how to balance comedy and drama, and to make it all gel into an engaging tale. And what a cast!
There’s so much to enjoy in this film, and I love that each of the main cast have wonderful arcs, and moments all culminating in a fantastic climax. I really liked this one.
