Stargate SG-1 (1999) – Fair Game, and Legacy

Carter (Amanda Tapping) gets promoted to Major in this episode, a wonderfully nice moment for the character, but things get interrupted when O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) gets beamed aboard an Asgard ship, which leads to the story for the episode when he has a conversation with Thor (voiced by Michael Shanks).

Written by Robert C. Cooper Fair Game was first broadcast on 9 July, 1999.

Thor reveals that the Goa’uld and Asgard are coming to Stargate Command to discuss a treaty modification in regards to Earth’s saftey. The Asgard wish to negotiate to established Earth as a protected planet, and the Goa’uld are determined to wipe out the threat that Earth now poses them.

Thor chooses O’Neill to represent Earth in the negotiations, but there is going to be a lot of trouble. Not the least of which are the Goa’uld Cronos (Ron Halder), Nirrrti (Jacqueline Samuda) and Yu (Vince Crestejo). There are plans within plans, betrayals in the offing and the fate of the planet may hang in the balance.

The Goa’uld claim that under the treat rules they can limit humanity’s development and also lay claim to both of Earth’s gates. O’Neill turns to Thor who in a roundabout way gives him a clue as to which way to go.

But there’s more trouble when Teal’c (Christopher Judge) and Cronos clash over past events. Cronos killed Teal’c’s father. But it may have been a set-up to force the conflict into a final battle, allowing the Goa’uld to wipe out Earth… unless SG-1 can find a way to sort things out.

When SG-1 discovers nine dead Goa’uld that seem to have died from exposure to some biological agent, Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) begins to suffer auditory and visual hallucinations!

Legacy was written by Tor Alexander Valenza this episode first debuted on 16 July, 1999.

Shanks gets to turn in a solid and emotional performance as things get so bad, he needs to be locked away for his own safety. But the big issue with this episode is that everyone jumps right to the fact that Daniel isn’t mentally stable instead of wondering if he’s under alien influence or exposed to something.

That’s a little sad, considering all the things the team has been through together.

As things get worse for Daniel, he sees a vision of Ma’chello, who may have the answer to what is going on. It may have been something he created to fight the Goa’uld. And it may be spreading to the only person on the base carrying a Goa’uld… Teal’c.

Can they team figure out a way to save the jaffa and their friend before it’s too late?

As each member of the team is infected, as well as Dr. Fraiser (Teryl Rothery), they each have to deal with the possibility of going mad while the devices work their way through their systems. It’s fun, smart, and well-written, but the fact that non one believed Daniel from the get-go is bothersome.

But damn, am I loving this rewatch!
