Dark Skies (1997) – Both Sides Now, and To Prey in Darkness

While John Loengard (Eric Close) tries to hunt down his abducted love, Kim Sayers (Megan Ward) by interrogating Hive members, Steele (Tim Kelleher) is working on persuading her to willingly join the Hive to see her child.

Bach (J.T. Walsh) tracks her down, she’s in Berkeley. It seems the Hive’s latest plan involved infiltrating the anti-war movement surrounding the Vietnam conflict. So he sends Juliet (Jeri Ryan) out after Kim to investigate, and, if she’s joined The Hive, kill her.

Written by Melissa Rosenberg this episode was broadcast on 8 March, 1997.

Steele has grown a goatee and dressed all in black to fit in with the counterculture movement of the time, and while preaching peace and Singularity to Kim, he’s committing the occasional act of violence.

John joins Juliet, returning the favor of his letting her join the Vietnam mission (and Bach has let him think it’s his idea).

When John finally tracks Kim down, the temptation to get to their son may be too much for Kim, she agrees to join the Singularity, but John works to persuade her to stay. With all the things Steele is showing her, including the way Majestic will get its budget from the Vietnam War it may be too late for John to convince her to stay, to find another way.

Kim joins The Hive. To save their son.

It’s an emotional blow for John, upping the ante, but will Majestic be able to stop The Hive’s plan at Berkeley?

To Prey in Darkness aired on 15 March, 1997, and was written by series creators and showrunners Brent Friedman and Bryce Zabel.

Loengard is descending into depression following Kim’s joining the Singularity, but Juliet agrees to work with him, which is good because it seems Majestic film of the 1947 encounter with the Grays/Hive has gone missing and has ended up in the hands of a reporter, Dorothy Kilgallen (Marilyn McIntyre).

It’s November 1965. Bach sends Juliet and John out to rundown leads about who may have taken the film. It uses this opportunity to remind us of all the story threads that have gone into the tapestry of the narrative.

Dorothy goes to another reporter, Ed Hawkins (Spencer Garrett) to ask to use his news programme to get the story out. But when Dorothy ends up dead Juliet and Loengard have to find the film before it gets broadcast. Albano (Conor O’Farrell) shows up to help the pair, but he may come into conflict as his desire to track down Steele, Kim, and his son may make him a bit of a loose cannon.

Will they be able to recover or destroy it before it’s broadcast? And what’s The Hive up to this week? And the episode closes with a John and Juliet in a passionate clinch!

Next week we finish the one and only season of Dark Skies as I dive into its final two episodes. It’s too bad, cause there’s something really enjoyable, smart, and dark at work in this series. I just don’t think it could go up against The X-Files and I don’t think, at the time, the market was ready for more than a couple big paranormal shows at a time.
